Possible to export h264 in 8K?

PostTue Nov 23, 2021 9:16 am

Yes it's not supported, I understand. But both Handbrake & FFMPEG will allow it, so it should be simple enough for Resolve also no? Is there a way to make Resolve (Studio) forget about trivialites and allow export of e.g. 8K or 11K render using h264?

I've done test exports in H264 and H265 at 8K (8192x4320 specifically) and they worked fine. Didn't test above 8K.

H264 file rendered at 8192x4320:

and re-imported into Resolve:

Note that I'm on macOS which means Resolve uses Apple's H264/H265 encoders (with or without HW accel) and it's possible that this will vary according to platform and hardware.

Is it not working for you then?

It's letting me select 8K UHD with 264 on a PC. If you mean 8192 x 4320 it's not showing up but I can enter the numbers under custom.

But won't the file be huge?

He probably means hardware encoding. There is 8k hardware encoding of HEVC but but not AVC in case of Nvidia GPU, it's limited to 4096x4096, so not a Resolve problem, Not sure about other hardware encoders

Neither of Nvidia or Intel QS are letting me.

Isn't Handbrake using QS?

Handbrake only uses QS if you tell it to; and on my rig of course there isn't one.

In Resolve if I'm using 8K and I choose H264, whether I choose Nvidia or Native (which is CPU of course) it tells me the function is not supported by the codec. Nvidia even won't process h264 above 4K. Native gives the same error at 8K but does seem to allow 6K.

No idea. Native works here at 8192x4320. Nvidia and QS fail. Rendering it out to UHD works also.

Can you try it at 11520x5760? ;)

And I guess also 7680 x 3840?

No problem rendering H.265 in 8K here with "use hardware acceleration…" activated. H.264 works too, but is interestingly a tad slower.

11520 doesn't work.

7680 does

I don't mind if Nvidia can't do it. I prefer H264 anyway and that tops out before 8K regardless (for NVENC).

I need to get the CPU, i.e. Native, to do 11520x5760.

Native right? Any idea what the blocker is?
And any chance you can try 8640 x 4320?

I can render h264 at 7680x3840. But my source is 11520x5760. Would really like to be able to output at this range. (It's 360° video so even 11K isn't all that much when viewing.)

Re: Possible to export h264 in 8K?

So: I'm able to export *up to* 8192W and 4320H with h264 in Resolve.
Those are the max values in each dimension; one more pixel either way gives me the finger.

But Handbrake, which is of course just a GUI for FFMPEG, is happily transcoding the ProRes 11520x5760 into H264 at the source resolution.

So I feel it must be something software-defined that tells Resolve where to stop. Do we have any hackers/code explorers who can figure this out?
Or is it looking like a suppport case is needed?

8640 x 4320 is not accepted for H.264, but it works for H.265. Even pretty fast, seems to be supported by Apple hardware.

My guess is nobody thought anyone would want H264 for high resolution files. You'll need to hope the programmers see this thread .

Well I have raised a support case, they must have programmed that specific limit, so presumably it shouldn't be tooo hard to remove the limiter... let's see I guess..
