PreSales - Resolve 16 Dongle work with Fusion 17?

Hi guys

Just checking, if I purchase now (I think my supplier only has stock of Resolve 16), would the dongle and license I get with Resolve 16, allow me a free digital upgrade and work with Resolve Studio 17 and also Fusion Studio 17?

Also, a while back there was the Speed Editor bundle deal where it came free with Resolve, is that still on, or long past already?

The dongle should work for all versions of Resolve and the recent versions of Fusion standalone. My Resolve 11 dongle works just fine.

Just to be clear, you can choose to get a USB dongle or an activation key, you don't get both.

Yep, the Resolve 16 dongle/license also works with Fusion Studio (and vice versa).
Unfortunately the free Speed Editor w/ Resolve license bundle has quite recently expired... but if you're quick you might still find it in stock with resellers... worth looking around.

Fusion Studio and Resolve on the same machine use the same activation.

So, with activation key you can run both Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio on two machines, simultaneously.

You can additionally have an unlimited number of free Fusion Studio Network Render Nodes.

Correct, it'll work with any version of Resolve after 14 (I think), and Fusion Studio from 17+. So you won't be able to open Fusion Studio 16 or 9 with your activation key, but 17.x and later is fine.

My supplier is weirdly pushing me for a Dongle version and telling me the activation key is locked to my pc. (It may be a translation issue as I have to use a translator to deal with them)

From the FAQ however, it seems if something happens to my pc, I can simply install on another 2 computers at a time and automatically the previous one will no longer work.

If I then install again on another computer, the oldest of the 2 installs will automatically stop working. So in a sense my supplier is correct that the activation key is tied to my pc, but its not a big deal as it will always work on the latest installed pc and older ones stop working by themselves.

Am I understanding the workings of the activation key correctly?

That's correct. You should ideally choose Help -> Deactivate License when moving license, as if you repeatedly sign in on new PCs and trigger the automatic deactivation of existing licenses there's some kind of check which will eventually block the license in case it's being used by lots of people. I think if that happens you can contact Support to get it working again, but better to use Deactivate License when you can to avoid that happening. (I've done it a couple of times with no problems, I think it's only an issue if you do it over and over.)

I would say the activation license is clearly superior in nearly every scenario. It gives you two machines instead of one, it doesn't take a USB port, it can't break, be lost or stolen, and it will never wear out with age. Write down the activation key somewhere secure and it will be good for two machines, forever.

The dongle is the only solution if you need to have an air-gapped machine, or one that is almost never connected to the internet. And in an office setup, where a company might want to buy one or two licenses to share between many staff, the dongle would be required (as there's no license server support in Resolve.)

But otherwise I'd recommend activation key all day long.

Nope. Other than returning it to the seller for a refund - which I imagine most vendors should be OK with for a dongle (if done within 14 days or 30 days or whatever their terms are).

Or selling it privately.

And don't buy dongles from Ebay unless it's from someone you trust. There are counterfeit dongles in circulation that are disabled when BMD identifies them.

The dongle question comes up so often it's crazy.
