Consistent Resolve aborts

PostWed Nov 24, 2021 12:28 am

The program continues to abort for no apparent reason. After three separate installs resulted in the same behavior I:
1. Completely uninstalled Resolve
2. Did a complete system check up and repair with Microsoft tools and others (System Mechanic)
3. Several Virus/Malware cleanups
4. Complete verification of the file structures
5. Windows repair tools
6. and a couple other things

Reinstalled resolve.

Prior to the above, it aborted on hitting the preview box for Video Collage. Now it aborts rather randomly ... although it still aborts on the preview box if I can get that far.

Initially when it aborted it gave me the option go report the issue ... now all it does is close the program.

I did install it on another computer (Surface Pro 3). it did work. however the text/symbols are too small to read. It also displayed the video preview with a black vertical stripe in each of the collage boxes.

Is there a log file I could include that could help with this?

This has gotten more than a little frustrating.

After cleaning out the system of ALL files related to DaVinci Resolve and BlackMagic, including cleaning the registry. Emptied the Recycle Bin. Verified the system with ChkDsk, SFC and the utility System Mechanic to verify that there shouldn't be any internal problems. Downloaded and reinstalled the Program. Rebooted. Started Resolve. It started cleanly as a new install.

Created a project with the clips. Used the Generator to create a textured background. Added
the video collage effect to it. Inspector/Effects/video collage. Checked the Preview Tiles box. It thought about it for a few seconds then aborted. The window to report the problem showed up and I submitted it.

Restarted the program. Removed the Textured background. Added the video collage to the top clip. Effects/video collage/checked preview box. Abort. This time it did NOT give me option to submit the abort info.

Logs for this last run are in :

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Hopefully someone will be able to look at these and let me know what's going on. Or have the authority to submit this for BlackMagic's attention

it looks you have a GeoForce GT 740

that will NOT run resolve.

this is a comparison with a good (old) card:

Decklink Studio 4K (12.3)
Resolve 18.5.1 / fusion studio 18
GPU 3090ti drivers 512.59 studio

Finally an answer, THANK YOU very much.

To confirm: The Graphics card I have (Nvidea GT 740) will NOT support Resolve.

Is there a minimum specification for a a graphics card that will support Resolve ... or is the example the lowest set of specs that will work?

It would seem that once Resolve figures out that it can't use the video card it doesn't want to work at all.

So, it looks like I will be unable to use Resolve until I upgrade as planned next year.

Or I find an inexpensive card that will work (hence the questions above).

Hmmm ... I wonder if there are only certain things that won't work (which I'll have to stay away from) and others that do ...

THANKS again for the information.

i think there is a minimum CUDA compatible number:

What are the system requirements for DaVinci Resolve 17?
Minimum system requirements for Windows
Windows 10 Creators Update.
16 GB of system memory. ...
Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 10.4.1 or later.
Integrated GPU or discrete GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM.
GPU which supports OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 11.
NVIDIA/AMD/Intel GPU Driver version – As required by your GPU
W10-19043.1645- Supermicro MB C9X299-PGF - RAM 128GB CPU i9-10980XE 16c 4.3GHz (Oc) Water cooled
Decklink Studio 4K (12.3)
Resolve 18.5.1 / fusion studio 18
GPU 3090ti drivers 512.59 studio

Your GT 740 has a Compute Capability of 3.0. The minimum required to run Resolve since version 16.2.8 is a Compute Capability of 3.5. You need to upgrade your GPU. Get one with as much Vram as you can afford, especially if you intend to edit UHD media.

Alternatively (or until you are in a position to upgrade your hardware) you could download and install an earlier version of Resolve ie one that is/was compatible with your existing card... per Charles post above, that would be any version before Resolve 16.2.8.

Earlier version are available on the support page, you just have to scroll back through the various release announcements to find the earlier download links.
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."
