GPU for 4K 60fps Editing - Studio Version

PostThu Nov 25, 2021 1:02 am

Hi,

I'm not sure if this question has already been asked...

Just purchased Studio version, now looking for a decent GPU.
I usually work on DJI h.264 2x Tracks of 4K@60fps, mild grading, no fx.

Which GPU should I get?

Quadro RTX 4000
Quadro P4000 (2x SLI)

GeFroce RTX 2060 Super
GeFroce RTX 3070ti
GeFroce RTX 3080ti

Any experience using any of these GPUs?
Please share your thoughts.

General rule of thumb... buy the best GPU you can afford.

Resolve Studio makes intensive use of the GPU so your workflow will be easier if you've got the most horsepower available.

I edit 4K/50p videos with an old GTX1060/6 but I'm also using an older version of Resolve (15.3) that doesn't make such demands of the GPU. Most of the time my system runs smooth as silk but some things like temporal noise reduction, optical flow and such can cause it to drop to just a few frames per second in playback and render. A combination of heavy lifting like that can also produce out of memory errors.

So for 4K/60 work I'd take whatever card offers you at least 8GB (preferably more) of VRAM and the RTX series seem pretty popular.

Second that. You may need some NR sooner ore later with drone footage.

I edit 4K/50 with an RTX 3060 Ti, so a 3070 or 3080 should be fine (no experience with Quadro cards). I agree with the advice of buy the best GPU you can afford and shoot for at least 8GB of VRAM; even a modest 4K project can use 5GB with simple effects and transitions, and you'll want some headroom.

And if you ever want to zoom or pan in large stills, VRAM is very important too.

I'd go with whatever has >= 12G of VRAM for 4K renders

I have a RTX 2070 Super 8G and doing 1080p (renders from 4K BRAW) and I sometime approach my GPU memory limit ... so with 4K I can only imagine it being worse ...

Buy what a) has more VRAM (8 GB is a very minimum, the more the better, 12 GB would be nice, 16 GB will definitely be enough for UHD) b) won't break your budget.

I work with 4k all of the time, and a 3080 is silky smooth.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that float32 performance is more important than float64. Basically, that means that "gamer-y" (3080, 3060, GeForce) cards will perform better than Quatro Cards. But take everything else in this thread into consideration as well.

Given the same amount of VRAM, I'd definitely prefer the "gaming" card over Quadro just because of the price difference.

According to Puget Systems testing, the only advantage the Pro cards have over the RTX series is the higher VRAM counts; which probably aren't needed unless you are editing 8k or higher footage on a regular basis: https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommende ... mendations

here's the test on the RTX A6000: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/artic ... ance-2051/

You could pick up 3 3090s for the MSRP of one A6000, if you can find them @ their MSRPs. I had my system custom built, and I believe the 3080 was $1300 from the vendor at the beginning of 2021 (MSRP $700).
