Edit Overlay feature not working

PostMon Nov 29, 2021 1:10 am

Hi, I've been working through the "DaVinci-Resolve-17_Beginners-Guide.pdf" – excellent training resource!

On Page 132, Step 8, the instruction is given to "drag from the center of the source viewer into the timeline viewer" with the result that an "Edit Overlay" list of options will appear (as shown in the image).

When I do this, the edit overlay does not appear at all. I've tried re-starting the program, various different ways of dragging from the source viewer, and have looked through the preference settings, but can't seem to activate this editing feature.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,
I have experienced exactly the same problem (running DaVinci Resolve on MacBookPro, 8 GB, macOS Big Sur).
Being a newcomer to Resolve, I wander is the appearance of the edit overlay controlled by some parameter accessible through settings?
Any advice will be appreciated

Can you post a screenshot of your Edit page so we can see the issue as it is happening?

Working in Vers 18.0b2. You have to keep the mouse button pressed all the time until you select one of the options otherwise the menu will disappear.

Do you have one or two displays hooked up, Collin?

If two, are they both connected to the same GPU?

What is your Display Scaling set to? (It should only be 100%, nothing else.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Good evening,

I am facing the same issue than OP and other users on the thread, as I am following the beginner's guide (p. 126, step 10 of lesson 4) and no 'edit overlay' is to be seen appearing...

Single 38" monitor, 3840x1600 not scaled, hooked to a Mac M1 PRO, 32GB RAM, MacOS 12.4, Resolve 17.4.6 BUILD 4 which I have downloaded and installed earlier today.

Please advise...
Thx

Did you drag to the Timeline viewer? That is the right viewer. It won't show up if you try and just drag to the Timeline itself. You should see a little thumbnail of the video on the left under your mouse pointer as you drag it to the right over the Timeline viewer.

Thank you so much, Eric, you hit the nail!
Indeed, I dragged to the Timeline itself and not the Timeline Viewer...
This is my absolute beginner moment; I have yet to get familiar with all the UI elements and terms, but I'm already enjoying the product quite a lot.

I didn't do video editing in ages... how far the solutions have come since using Pinnacle Studio then AVID :o

BMD has made some really great training resources available for us.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... ning#books

I recommend the Beginner's Guide as a solid groundwork for working with Resolve. ;)
