Chaos with 3 external monitors on a 16" MacBook Pro M1 MAX

PostTue Nov 30, 2021 4:38 pm

I tried to install 3 screens for Davinci Resolve Studio. In the Mac system setup the screens are fixed.
Nr.1 the Macbook, 2. Samsung, 3 Samsung and 4 the Eizo CS2420 for the cleanfeed output.
I can install the screens without any problem but the next day every window of Davinci is on on an other screen! This is very frustrating
Of course I saved the preset named 3-screen-mac.
I tried everything but didn't find a system how to reproduce the position of the screens.
Of course the screens are all on before starting the Mac.

Greetings from Germany

It seems that Monterey still has some bugs in this area, I see the same behaviour, but only under 12.0.1.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Hi Uli,
Thanks for your answer, yes I also use Monterey 12.0.1 but have no experience with older MacOS.
After closing and restarting Davince the screens are mostly change positions.
Difficult to say it's MacOS or Davinci.....

I'm pretty sure it's Monterey. My older iMac under Mojave doesn't do this with DR 17.4.2.
Unfortunately, we have no other option on the M1 Pro or Max.

A couple of observations:

1) my opinion (just me) is that as powerful as the 16" M1 Max laptops are, they can't necessarily drive three monitors AND Resolve at the same time. I think you're going to run into horsepower issues.

2) if I were to use multiple OS monitors, I would make absolutely sure they're completely identical in terms of resolution. We've used a 2-up GUI display with Resolve for several years, and we made sure that they're both 2560x1440.

3) for judging final color, there are a bunch of good choices. Clean Feed won't work for color because it's not color managed -- you have to use a BMD display adapter like a Mini Monitor or a Decklink 4K/4K Extreme. If you're just editing, what you suggest will totally work, but I wouldn't push it too hard.

I own a 16" M1 Max myself, and it's been -- so far -- the best laptop I've ever owned, in more than 30 years of owning laptops (and 35 years of being a Mac user). But it's still not a desktop replacement. For editing and light-duty color, I think it'll be absolutely fine.
