Old renders in temp folder?

PostThu Dec 02, 2021 2:34 pm

Why do I have two folders that are over 9Gb in my appData>temp folder that seem to be from a Fusion page render? Also, why are they the only things being put in this folder?

That's your Fusion Disk Cache. It means at some point you enabled Cache To Disk on one or more nodes in Fusion.

It defaults to a 'temporary' folder, unless you set the DiskCache: path map in Fusion settings (in Resolve that's under the Fusion menu -> Settings)

I recently discovered a bug/design flaw that means that in Resolve, Cache To Disk is cleared every time you open the project. So I'm guessing you've not opened whatever project this was since that cache was created - unless the Cache to Disk being cleared is a newly added issue.

I've changed my DiskCache path map to my standard cache location, meaning that I can keep an eye on its usage and periodically clear it out manually, if desired. Or at least, I could if it were actually persistent like it is meant to be (and like it is in Fusion Studio.)

I'm still on 17.2.2 but the files in that folder were modified today. Did I do something different with one or two of my compositions without realizing it? If I delete these folders, is a worst case scenario that they have to render again or do I risk a media offline error that way?

I thought the only way to get it was to right-click on a node and specifically enable Cache To Disk, by clicking OK in this dialogue:

If you've not done that, then I'm not sure. Maybe there's some option I'm not aware of that enables it for you.

It's safe to delete. If the files aren't found, they get re-generated.

Could it be from a saver node somehow? I'm using them in more than two compositions, so it doesn't seem terribly likely, but worth asking.

Is anything in cache clip folders safe to delete if I can afford to wait for things to render again? I know there's delete render cache>unused, but I feel like I probably have a lot of stuff that's still being used in timelines I'm no longer using.

No, should just be from Cache To Disk. Saver nodes write to the filename and path specified.

Besides, we can see the names of the nodes in your screenshot - Merge2, MediaOut1, MediaOut1.

CacheClip contains three types of media:

- OptimizedMedia : generated by manually doing Generate Optimized Media. Not re-generated. But unlikely you're using OM, as proxies are much better
- render cache (video) - will be regenerated if deleted; only time it can cause an issue is if you delete it with a project already open, in which case you may get Media Offline. But with Resolve closed, it's always safe to delete, so long as you're OK with losing all render cache;
- audio waveform cache - will be regenerated, but I recommend not deleting the 'audio' folder as it uses far less space than video, and generating waveforms can be a little slow, and while it's generating for a given clip you won't see that clip's waveform.

So if you need to free up space, and are happy that there's no render cache in there for projects you're still using and wouldn't want to have to re-render, then delete all subfolders except 'audio'.
