Moving projects from Windows 10 to Linux

PostWed Dec 08, 2021 3:45 pm

Hello,

I would like to use Linux for a project I started on Windows. How do I convert a project from one operating system to another, or is there a way of connecting a single database to two different operating systems?

Oshra.

If you're using PostgreSQL server there is nothing to move. Any supported OS can read and write projects from the common DB. You just have to make sure the source media mapping is translated to the other OS in the preferences. Instead of that you can also just relink the media on Linux.

If you're not setup for collaboration you can save DRP from Windows and load it on Linux. The media path mapping will work the same way as if you were using collaboration.

Hi

Databases and project formats are portable across platforms for the same DaVinci Resolve version.

Given the change in file paths, your media will initially appear offline. There's two ways to approach this:

a. If your Windows media path was (say) Z:/HomeNAS2/Media/, and your Linux path is /media/HomeNAS2/Media/ set up a media path mapping. This will keep the database info as-is (i.e. in Windows format), allowing you to go back to the Windows machine and continue working if needed.

b. After loading the project, you can right click the Master bin and relink media. This is similar to other relink workflows - you point it to the top level folder and Resolve works out the equivalents. The project is updates to point to these paths now, so you'll need another relink on Windows if you happen to go back there.

Both workflows are well described and can be searched from the DaVinci manual form the Help menu.

Remember Resolve has different codec support on the different OS's

Free on Linux will not be able to read H.264 or 265. And even Paid will not read AAC on Linux.

All 3 of these work on free in Windows.
