DVR appears crippled under Apple Silicon

PostWed Dec 22, 2021 7:36 am

Full feature set seems to be missing in the latest avatar of DVR 17.4.3, but you can bring it all back under Rosetta.
Though under Rosetta DVR is a little unstable. :?
None of this is mentioned anywhere, hopefully it will be fixed in 17.5
but at least there is a workaround and now you know it.
For Atmos integration in logic is rock solid and never had any crashes, So as a workaround you can Mix Atmos in Logic as a temporary solution while BM irons out things for Apple Silicon.

By the way, if you are on windows 10 you are good to go.

Hi Rajiv

In our testing with Dolby Atmos on M1, we do not see feature disparities. (see message below)
Do you have a sample Atmos clip (and/or project) we can check with?

Regards
Shrinivas

Hi Shrinivas
Here you can test it with the Atmos file -one from the supplied Fairlight guide.
And here is the screenshots that full set is available under Rosetta but is unstable because of the nature of virtualisation.

Hi

After checking with devs, my message above was misleading. There is no support for Dolby Atmos natively on Apple silicon.

Thanks, and apologies.

Why not?
Where is this documented?
Is it in any of the release notes?
Will it be supported?
When will it be supported?

I appreciate the speed gains on M1 Macs on 17.4.x but it seems disingenuous to me to have a production release missing a major feature on one platform (which is not clearly disclosed).

I suppose it's up to Dolby to release an M1 version of the Dolby Atmos libraries that DaVinci Resolve uses.
https://professionalsupport.dolby.com/s/article/Is-the-Dolby-Atmos-Renderer-Supported-on-M1-Macs-Big-Sur?language=en_US
Dolby Article wrote:The Dolby Atmos Renderer is compatible with, but not fully qualified on, M1 Macs running MacOS Big Sur, as the Renderer runs via the Rosetta 2 translation layer, which may cause performance issues.

But it's unclear to me why it can't run under Rosetta 2 as a separate process. I mean running Resolve as native and the Atmos Renderer under Rosetta.

It's possible that BMD needs to wait for Dolby to certify their own Renderer on M1 first. But the Logic Pro 10.7.x built-in Dolby Renderer works just fine on M1, AND it also does binaural rendering, all from the Logic Pro interface. So it can't be an insurmountable technical issue to compile it on ARM.

I think we can all understand resource constraints and prioritization, but a minimum of communication would be appreciated. At the very least, what's holding it up and what is the plan to include it. An ETA would be a great plus.

Extra bonus: include a binaural renderer feature for quick editing/QCing with headphones :)

I opened a support case with BMD and basically got a non-response response. Including "At this time for native Dolby Atmos support on the macOS platform, Intel architecture is required.", which is obviously not true since Logic Pro X runs natively and supports Atmos features, including a built-in binaural renderer.

I hope they have someone working on this. I imagine that more and more Mac customers will soon be running on M1 machines and are bound to hit this wall, and I'm honesty a bit surprised to see that so few DaVinci Resolve users are doing Atmos work on Macs. Is there just not a lot of Atmos work being done on Resolve? Or just not on Macs? Or are people just running it in Rosetta mode? Just more questions.

I suppose not a lot of Atmos work is done in DR. As you already noticed, Logic Pro is handling it, and that's what I've seen used a lot around here.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

GRRRRRR. I just spent $300 JUST FOR DOLBY ATMOS INTEGRATION. And now I found out that it won't work, simply because I have an M1 mac. What a bunch of BS. Not only that, this problem has been a known problem from this thread for almost a year! I spent all day trying to get my system to work with a Dolby Atmos configuration. I've never used Resolve before, and now I want to throw it away, actually - the ONE feature I needed it for is not working for me, simply because I have the latest mac? I really don't care if it's Dolby's problem or BMD - they advertise that it works. I bought it specifically for that purpose and no other. This should not be happening.

I got a reply from BMD support that basically says that this will be released as soon as the M1 Atmos SDK from Dolby is generally available.

The binaural renderer and Dolby functions seem to be working now in the Apple Silicon version of v18.
