Which audio codecs are available in DVR Studio?

PostSat Jan 01, 2022 3:39 pm

I'm currently exploring DaVinci Resolve. In the free version I can only find the AAC audio codec. Which ones are available in DVR Studio?

It depends on the container you choose. MP4 offers only AAC, but QuickTime or MXF should offer you PCM (uncompressed) too. I think that's also true for the free version.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

The Resolve Supported Codecs document outlines support on the different platforms:

Yes, you're right. I needed to change to - among others - Quicktime, to get LPCM. I'm not sure why they've chosen this solution. In PowerDirector Ultimate I can choose audio codec more independent of the video codec. That way I can get a .MP4 with LPCM or AAC. But since I've found DaVinci Resolve to be a better video editor I need both of them. Luckily DVR is for free.

Thanks by the way!

I've seen that page too but I couldn't find out for example if .MP4 and LPCM could be used together.

The specs for MP4 doesn't allow PCM audio. Some do it anyway (including cameras).

It gets a bit confusing since MP4 is used along with MPEG-4. If I render a movie with the file extension MP4, its video codec is MPEG-4. I'm currently trying to figure out the difference, since I've always thought that they were the same thing but only different names.

The H.264 codec, also known as AVC is defined in the MPEG-4 standards as MPEG-4 Part 10. It's the same thing, but where are you seeing it called MPEG-4? I don't think that's common in modern apps.

In PowerDirector's rendering settings, which I've been used to for a couple of years.

I can just as well add the audio codec options for MP4 in PowerDirector.

That doesn't mean that it's according to standard and that it'll play everywhere. I'd avoid it.

Okay, thanks!

Which video codec would you recommend for music videos with LPCM plain stereo? I know about Quicktime but I guess that's not what's used in TV etc.

The AAC format is as you know a compressed format. Although it's quite well sounding it's not the same. I haven't been able to find out if Youtube converts the audio in MP4 movies to AAC. They support LCPM as well as other formats too, but I'm not sure if it only applies to audio uploaded with a still. Any ideas there?

Do Note, this document is for V16. it is not completely accurate to V17

Black Magic can't be bothered to make a new document. I guess they expect people to buy $300 software without even knowing if it will work for them.

As I wrote, QuickTime is just a container. It can hold dozens of codecs, many of which are used in TV.
MXF would be an alternative, it can hold LPCM too. Talk to your client.
