Colored Border Effect does not work correctly

PostWed Jan 12, 2022 8:55 am

Hi all

DR 17 brought us a nice effect called "Colored Borders", but it does not work correctly. I draws a border around the frame, dut it doesn't resize. Neiter in the Edit nor Fusion page
Quite a few use this as an additional effect when creating picture-in-picture videos and want to additionally highlight the embedded clip.

So draw two clips ontop each other in your timeline. Select the top video and add "Colored Border" from the Effects Toolbox. Now try to resize or crop. The clip will resize/crop while the border stays uneffected.

The only Workaround I could find is this: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?t=57269

You could do it as a compound clip.
Solid color layer 1, clip layer 2, highlight both, right click to create new compound clip, right click compound, edit in timeline…adjust your border to taste, when done click (double click?)(bottom left hand) to go back to main timeline and treat as a normal clip with border.

The new compound will appear in the active bin.

Maybe?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, that would work.
I did something similar before and I was quite happy we got this new effect to speed up the process but now realizing it's broken was a bit of a bummer. After all we're still dealing with workarounds.

However, someone took an approach and created a "stroke" effect. It works quite well :)
So I recommend to check oput this post: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=144325#p774385

Still the "Colored Border" effect is broken !

After you add the Colored Border effect, you can open the Fusion page from the Effects tab of the Inspector, then add a Transform node after the ColoredBorder group and change its size there.

mmmh, I'm not very happy with the clumsy workarounds.
IMHO a 'border' should be a simple (set of) parameter(s) for many of the Transform and/or Mask tools, here's why:
As posted initially, the Colored Borders effect doesn't resize simply; it's even more complex when you deal with cropped PiP using a rectangular mask that has a different aspect ratio than the background video.
Basically, unless I've missed something, you'd have to dig into and 'reverse engineer' the Colored Border effect that would sit between the masked (cropped) Media In and the subsequent Transform (resize). Otherwise, the border does not follow the rectangular cropped input frame. Clumsy and time consuming when you have multiple masked (cropped) clips in PiP arrangement, with varying shape and size across the timeline.
As most here know, other major editing tools have a more or less comprehensive 'border' setting within their PiP/crop/resize/mask tools

That effect should reference the clip border, not the timeline border. I think BMD built this wrong.

You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

As they are, I don't think any of the Fusion Effects will resize with the Edit page transform controls because they are built in Fusion, any transforms done on the Edit page don't migrate to the Fusion page. You can add the Fusion Effect, then change the clip into a compound clip, then any Edit page transforms should work.

I recommend the script that @panos_mts put together. Referenced in viewtopic.php?f=21&t=125562&hilit=+border (and scroll to link at the bottom).

Direct quoted text:
I have made a custom fusion effect that adds a stroke. You can use it from the edit page. You need to have Resolve 17.

Download the setting file from here https://www.dropbox.com/s/pnaic46pizup4 ... tting?dl=1
and copy it to the appropriate folder, on windows the folder is "C:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Fusion\Templates\Edit\Effects"
PC Win 10 Pro, 64GB ram; NVidia 522.30; dual monitor; RTX 3080 (10GB); auto/CUDA processing mode; SSD cache, separate SSD for data; Davinci Studio 19b33 build

Agreed. Same behavior in 18.5; frames the timeline and not the clip it's applied to. The Open FX tab is greyed out so it cannot be repositioned or edited from the Edit page.

1+ something so straight forward should not be so complicated to implement. The border should surround the clip's boundary, not the timeline's. Rather than mucking around getting davinchi to do what I wanted, I found it easier to embed the border into the actual clip :-/

Just because there are workarounds doesn't mean the application can't be improved for beginners.
