Davinci 17.4.3 will not launch - problem with Radeon card?

PostSat Jan 15, 2022 3:38 am

My issue is that DR 17.4.3 will not launch - the opening splash pic displays then nothing happens. However, if I disable my Radeon card the system will launch and initialize only to reach a warning "Unable to Initialize GPU."

I suspect this is a problem with my Radeon card, as I had this problem starting a week ago just after a new Radeon driver installed. DR (then version 16) would not launch - same issue. If I disabled the Radeon card it would launch and I could open and edit projects but DR would eventually crash. I updated to 17 hoping the issue would be cleared up but instead the program has become completely unusable. Any advice?

System specs:

Windows 10 Pro
Version 10.0.19042
X64 type
Processor Intel i7-9700 CPU 3.00 ghz 3000 mhz 8 cores
16 gb ram
Display Intel UHD Graphics 630
Radeon RX 580 Series (1 gb ram)

Logs file should be attached.

Please disable the Intel graphics and just use the 580.

If I disable the Intel graphics card and load a project I get a black screen like this and the program becomes unresponsive.

Is the monitor plugged into the 580? And then, does it really have only 1 GB VRAM?
I don't remember a 580 with such a small VRAM. It would be too small for DR anyway.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Open the Windows System Information app, then do a File - Save to create a .NFO file.

Provide that .NFO file.

I made a mistake about the Radeon card memory - it's 8,192 mb (which is a bit more normal).

NFO file is attached as a zip file, thank you.

It is normal for Radeon Polaris to take some time for initialisation in Resolve in Windows during which time it seems like Resolve has frozen and no video is displayed. Have you waited long enough for it to recover?
I haven't observed such behaviour under MacOS, which indicates it's probably a OpenCL thing.

@Mario: Yes, that can be normal.

@Donald: You have your display connected to the onboard Intel iGPU connector. You need to connect the display to the AND graphics card.

If that doesn't help, send another Resolve log and NFO file with the display connected to the AMD card.

Plugging the monitor into the graphics card did the trick! Much obliged.
