HDR P3D65 ST2084 Image viewer for iPad

PostSat Jan 15, 2022 5:27 am

To all community members,

Currently I am grading an feature film for which I need send frame grabs in HDR PQ - P3D65 ST2084 1000Nits to Director of Photography to view in is M1 iPad Pro and approve.

Is there an application or way to export from Resolve as HDR Stills and view it on M1 iPad Pro as HDR and approve?

Thanks.

I can use my iPad Pro to view PQ still images in PNG, TIF or HEIF formats in the ordinary Photos app, as long as they are correctly tagged. However I have found the HDR mode of the iPad display somewhat unreliable with stills. Sometimes it clips the HDR at 100 nits. Sometimes it displays the full range, but sometimes it will then fade it out to clipping at 100 nits.

The only way I have found to ensure HDR display is to keep an HDR video open in a small window at the same time, which is a rather annoying bodge.

Has anybody else experienced the same?

Thanks Nick for response. For Still Images rendered from Resolve you don't have Color Space and Gamma Tag associated with it or no options to add it. How it displays without it?

I am not aware of a way to include the correct tag on export from Resolve. I have been adding tags to the images afterwards.

How to apply tags to Stills afterwards and what kind of software or plugin used to do that?

Thanks.

If you have access to it, Photoshop has P3 D65 PQ. Not sure if that is exactly to spec, you'd have to test. Just open the image and then go to edit -> assign profile. Upon saving with cmd/ctrl+alt+shift+w uncheck convert to sRGB and check embed profile.

Which means photo tagging is not really triggering HDR mode properly.

Try sending 1 frame MOV tagged properly (eg. ProResXQ, 10bit RGB, 10 bit YUV). This may work and HDR should be reliable.
