17.4.3 — M1 timeline audio crackling if clip is uncached

PostSat Jan 15, 2022 1:36 pm

Another bug which I think may be M1-specific (I've not noticed it on my Intel MacBook Pro).

Issue:
Timeline audio crackles during playback if a clip is uncached (and requires caching). Crackles disappear if render cache indicator has turned blue or if render caching is disabled in the Playback menu.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Create timeline and add an audio track
2) Set render cache to Smart or User
3) Play timeline to check that the audio doesn't already crackle
4) Add something to the video timeline that will trigger the render cache (eg. 'Fade On' title template).
5) Play timeline — on my M1 system I get crackles if the red caching line hasn't turned blue. Once it's blue, no crackles.

There are no audio plugins or effects added to the audio track. The project is at 48kHz, as is the audio interface. Audio interface is a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre Thunderbolt.

The issue appears to disappear if the app is running in Rosetta mode, FYI.

Is anyone else having this issue, or is it exclusive to something in my setup?

It happens to me as well, but I've gotten so used to it that I can't even remember if it happened on my PC. Kind of a popping/crackling when it's struggling to play back rather than a more graceful sounding failure right? Makes you think there is something wrong with the audio track for a moment.

Yes, it's similar to the audio crackling you might get if playing audio back and the sample rate isn't set correctly right.

Is your viewer set to "Show All Video Frames"?

No. If it were, it might have caused the issue. Now I have no other clue.

I have had some problems with wild sound sampled on a 44 khz used on a 48khz timeline. Resampling them to 48khz solves the problem. BMD should treat this as a bug however.

It doesn't seem to be a 48kHz issue. I've just loaded a project template up with a few overlays already in place. Resolve (17.4.5) starts caching immediately, and at exactly the same moment a Youtube video playing in background starts crackling.
