Color management settings

PostSun Jan 16, 2022 5:18 pm

I'm trying to learn about color management and my color management settings look different that what I am seeing people use in tutorials on Youtube.

The top screenshot is mine.
The bottom is a screenshot of the new Davinci Resolve tutorial on Youtube about color management.

I've tried resetting my preferences and reinstalling Davinci on my computer and another computer.
I have the paid version (Studio) and its up to date.

Thanks

You have a newer version of Resolve where they added a second simplification layer to the settings (bad choice imo but that's another topic).

If you'd like to follow along you need to uncheck the Automatic Color Management box right below the Color Science to get to the semi-advanced settings and then choose custom for the actual full settings should you want to but choosing HDR DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate is the one that would match your screenshot bottom picture.

I agree that the automatic setting box should be unchecked as default.

My general caution to anyone who mentions color management is to note that it will break most of the effects/titles on the edit tab and all of Fusion.

So if these are important features to you, I would recommend using CST's instead.

I personally think the flexibility and transparency of CST's make them superior even if you don't need fusion.

I only have files from my GH5 and GH5S both UHD 60P VLog I like Color Management for the reason I can place files in the media page right click , select Panasonic Vlog and do nothing else. Edit in a 1920x1080 timeline and export rec709. I can then change to a PQ setting and export again doing nothing. I do not do Fusion other than titles which seem to work fine so not sure about your comment if they refer to Text + titles or generated in Fusion. I can`t imagine BM giving instructions on how to use Color Management if it didn`t work. Do you have some real examples? I started by using the color space transform in the color page but have switched as i find it easier.

Both managed or manual have their strengths and weaknesses. The CST OFX doesn't have RED's IPP2 output mapping which some people like. You could solve it with IPP2 LUTs but that's less ideal as it involves file dependencies and isn't math based.

If you're interested, Ron, there's a detailed examination of the Fusion / Wide Gamut issue in the tutorial clip below, and some of its workarounds. It's quite a long watch, but there's a clear demonstration of one of the most basic Text+ issues within the first minute.
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

Interesting thanks. I expect I have not come into this with what I do.

Yes, this is a great video. The Author has a lot of great info on his channel.

Sadly, the work around he talks about here is way over my head. Thus my recommendation to use CSTs, if I can figure it out, it is obviously pretty simple
