Sync/Align on waveform problem

PostMon Jan 17, 2022 8:47 pm

I've run into two, similar problems on the attached project.

Video 2: ProRes 422 (converted), 5760x2880, 25fps, 128kb/s - 48kHz
Video 1: Simple MP4 h264 100 mbit SDR files (....001.MP4 and ....002.MP4), 3840x2160, 25 fps, 128kb/s - 48kHz

Audio has been normalized.

Video 1 contains two files, one continuous recording split in two (by camera). Both valid.

Note: Audio vaweform rendered too short (factor 2)

This cannot be aligned, because of file "...002.MP4".

Note, that both leading audio tracks are rendered in exactly (?) half the space, required.

Selecting "Auto Align Clips" and "based on waveform", leads to this organisation, that is obviously wrong:

Audio now rendered correctly, but sync/align still not successful.

Repeating "align" alters nothing. But now the waveform is rendered correctly in size (25fps?), but alignment is off (as if audio is displayed based on 50fps).

Now, when I try to align the tracks manually, initially the audio tracks "loose" the vaweforms - making adjustment impossible - but after a bit of "movement", vaweforms turn up again.

After a repeated alignment, this is the new - weird - result:

Realignment - weird results.

Seemingly perfectly aligned on audio vaweforms, but now the vaweforms display only occupies half the required size (audio is fully present in clips). Again!

Somehow, it looks as if DaVinci Resolve assumes 50 fps, when aligning and displaying audio, although the time base/frame rate really is 25fps.

Project UHD, 25 fps. Project created today.

Extra audiofiles were not requested to be aligned, but when they are, the result is also "weird". The individual audio files, seem to be synced as expected (between the audio files only), but not in any way aligned to the audio in the video.

Version 17.4.3 (10) Studio version, Monterey 12.1.

Any ideas? I'll create a new project based on the material and add the result to the thread later.

Re: Sync/Align on waveform problem - addition

PostMon Jan 17, 2022 9:37 pm

I created a new project from scratch.

Video 1: File ....001.MP4 followed by ...002.MP4
Video 2: ProRES

Selecting alignment has no effect, and no error message. Audio display is correct, it seems.

Altering layout to:

Video 1: File ....001.MP4
Video 2: ProRES
Video 3: File ...002.MP4

Alignment now works, and seems correct. Edit index is like this:

Skærmbillede 2022-01-17 kl. 22.21.47.png
Video clips aligned

As seen in the index, V1 and V3 do not overlap, but align perfectly (V1 out: 06:27:01 and V2 in: 06:27:02). Alignment base on waveform should be possible, even when placing the files in V1 - ....001.MP4 - and V3 - ....002.MP4 - ins sequence - then alignment is not shown in edit pane, when the three video files are selected).

At least an inadequacy, if not a bug.

This time, there is no "half space" renderings of audio vaweforms, but the "factor 2" discrepancy between waveform display and video extend has been observed intermittendly before (nbut never in a reproducible wa, as in the previous post).

Re: Sync/Align on waveform problem

The same project, with everything sync'ed (ahem):

Sync gone haywire - bonkers "innit"?

Anyone capable of reading the waveforms can see, that this is not the case (FCPX has no problem).

It is also obvious, that the separate audio files (one M-S and one AmbiX) are aligned, whereas the group of videos (whether the marked is present or not, identical result) quite obviously is not.

The biggest problem is, what happens after adding the marked video above. I cannot find any way, to get the system to accept, the presence of any audio in the clip (there is audio present - continuation of the prevoius file).

Now, if I cut the 'shortish' clip (2 minutes) from the time line, and insert it again as Video 3, above the two video tracks, the result becomes the following:

Skærmbillede 2022-01-18 kl. 17.00.27.jpg
Look, where the audio to the video ended up!
Skærmbillede 2022-01-18 kl. 17.00.27.jpg (922.59 KiB) Viewed 959 times

Now the audio is actually turning up, but.... but.... whew... The audio is actually "crash-cut" into a separate audio-file (M-S Audio), that originally stretched quite a bit more to the right.

Why is the audio associated with a new, added video track not added/inserted as a separate audio track?

If the existing audio tracks A3 to A7 where "renumbered" to A4 to A8 (without "killing" the naming in FairLight, where A3 is named M-S and A4 is named AmbiX in the linked group of tracks (currently A4 to A7) nobody would complain either. I could even have accepted, that the audio to video track was placed as A8 (without or with a note, like "V3". Simply smashing the content into a pre-existing audio track is really not "narjs" (a very diplomatic term).

What goes wrong? Are there any settings, that can prevent the displayed, completely illogical and destructive behaviour? If there are, why are this settings not active as default?

Regards but a bit miffed ;-)

P.S. The well organised world of lotteries begin to look attractive in comparison to DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.4.3 (10) Studio on Monterey 12.1 on an M1 "null" (16GB, 1TB, 10Gbit) and directly connected external Thunderbolt 3 SSD (Samsung 970 Pro in Yottamaster enclosure).
