Change from Colour to Monochrome

PostWed Jan 19, 2022 10:13 am

I am an almost total beginner to video editing.

I have a colour clip that I want to change gradually, from start to finish, to a monochrome sepia tint. I have discovered how to do this from colour to b&w, but the only tutorials I've seen with regards to applying something in sepia use the rgb controls to simulate sepia, but not render a true monochrome.

Have you tried the Sepia Tint under the Gallery Devinci Resolve Looks?

Hi xunile,
thanks for your reply.
I cannot find a setting called Looks, nor open a window akin to the one you have opened in your 3rd screenshot. Please can you provide some directions?
Thank you.

Hey Justin, from the Color Page, go to the Workspace menu and choose Gallery
Cheers

I don't understand how this works.

I have found the sepia effect, but when I double click it to apply to the video, I get the following screenshot:

DVR Sepia Issue.jpg

This seems to be some kind of error. Whatever the "offline" message indicates, I am definitely with access to the internet, via ethernet cable.

Also, during one attempt, I managed to apply the sepia effect to the video, but it didn't graduate, and was just applied to the entire clip.

Thanks for your time.

xunile, are you sure that this sepia setting can be added to a video in graduation? I have been trying to add it for the past couple of days, but without success.

Please can you provide me with directions.

Many thanks.

You don't double-click, you right-click and choose Apply Grade.

Put you Playhead at the point you want the Sepia Tone, then add the Resolve Look. Set keyframes for the Color Correctors that are added, then move the playhead back to where the video was normal. Set the saturation on Correctors 2 and 3 back to 50. On Corrector 5, set the Gain Gamma back to the center on the Color Wheel. Makse sure you add keyframes for the 3 Correctors. You should be set.

Okay xunile, thanks for your explanation. As I mentioned, I am pretty much an absolute beginner so will need to research your instructions. That's fine.

But just to confirm that, with your instructions applied, I will have my several minutes clip gradually change from full colour at the beginning, to full monochrome sepia at the end.

Many thanks.

To do a gradual change from one color correction to another, you need to keyframe it. Keyframing is a very basic part of the color process. It's more than we can explain in a forum message, because a lot would depend on exactly how you created the monochrome look.

For anybody new to Resolve Color, be sure read the free textbook "The Colorist Guide to DaVinci Resolve 17," available on Blackmagic's Training website:

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... e/training

You'll find this is enormously helpful. The 3625-page manual is good as well, but the textbook presents the material on color in a much more concise way.

Using the Sepia Resolve Look you can go from full color to Sepia gradually over the course of seconds or minutes using keyframes as summarized in my post.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

In the end I discovered an easy method was to add an adjustment layer above the video clip, apply a sepia grade and graduate the effect. This seems to be the simplest way.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to assist me. Thanks for the knowledge.
