Importing Editing AVC, H.265 10-bit 4:2:2 problems

PostThu Jan 20, 2022 11:01 pm

Hi,

I have a file that is a converted HEVC file from a ZCAM E2-S6 ZRAW format. I've been trying to import the file into Resolve free edition and it has been unsuccessful. I did do research to see if I could answer the problem but I did not fin anything that seemed useful outside of the possibility that I need the paid Studio version.

I have tested with more than one file and such and had no luck with it working. I did find that VLC will not play it but Kodi the media player will. I do have the windows HEVC codec installed. I am on Windows 10 with the newest Resolve free installed.

I do have a quick test clip here that can be downloaded for review. Any help would be greatly apricated.

Could you share the file from a Google Drive or something far more potent like that.

How large is the size of the "quick test clip"? It would be really "narjs" to know.

The download starts at roughly 33-35 kilobyte/sec and quickly reduce speed and hovers in the region of 18-20kb/sec and that is - to put it mildly - extremely slow on a full duplex 350 megabit fibre cable connecting doing virtually nothing. Repeated the attempt, but nothing happens at all in these cases.

I could test, if the problem exists in the Studio version.

What are the specs for the file in addition to 10-bit 4:2:2 (try using "Mediainfo"). What hardware do you use?

Here is a Google Drive link to the clip:

I have a i7 3770, with a 1050ti. I don't know that my setup would effect it as for whatever reason Resolve does not even seem to see the files, but maybe it will come into play. Again thanks for all the help and support!

In version 16 I don't think 10 bit 4.2.2 HEVC was supported in the free version. Don't know if that was changed in 17.

That's half the battle. The other question is how up to date is your CPU? Most will struggle with 4.2.2 HEVC.

With that hardware playing 265 4.2.2 is going to be painful even if Resolve sees it. Transcode it to something easier on your computer.

It's your file that is not supported. There's no container specific description of the file.
If you rewrap to mov/mp4, Resolve Studio plays the file fine. (fine as in very slowly, but plays it)

What program did you use to convert from zraw?

The Google share helped a lot. Download speed around two thousand times faster ;-)

The Intel i7 3xxx is a third generation CPU released 2012 (current CPU’s are gen. 12xxx) and the GPU is from 2016. The CPU was designed before the HEVC standard was even approved, and only God knows, how much software support is required to get this rig running on h265 10bit 4:2:2 with the specified frame size.

Weird video file format

Mediainfo is unusually terse and says h265 10bit HDR ST2086, 4:2:0 BT.709 - a weird combination, but - hey - combined with the fact, that no frame rate seems to be specified for the 6144 x 3240 format, that surely is some weird video file.

DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.4.3 build 10 does not recognize the file at all. I guess, the weird file format is the main cause.

Even if the file could be imported, it would probably be a slow performance on your rig (like letting a seventy year old human run a marathon; som seventy year olds have both the condition and stamina, alas… the speed is something like “arrived last - half a day after leading runners" ;-).

You can rewrap it with Shutter Encoder (or ffmpeg, for that matter), and DR will accept it. But as kfriis already noted, it will still be playing very slowly due to the immense size.
Better scale it down or convert to a mezzanine codec.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Yes the shutter encoder worked great! It now works perfectly. Thank you guys so much for the help on this! Resolve doesn't seem to play all that fast but its fine in VLC go figure. Regardless this is huge thank you!
