IPP2 pipeline - broken - crushing highlights - Win 17.4.3

PostMon Jan 24, 2022 1:33 pm

Hey Gang,

BMD DR Studio 17.4.3
Win 10 Pro - current build

Using what I believe are the *proper* IPP2 pipeline settings for editing RED footage (R3D), the Output DRT is crushing the highlights down to about mid-grey. Are others experiencing this issue?

The Color Management settings

And Camera RAW settings

What if the input color space is set to 'REDWideGamutRGB/Log3G10 ?

I think your timeline luminance needs to be much higher in order for the IPP2 tonemapper to map it's luminance to a proper rec.709 scale. Otherwise the available range is already mapped to SDR levels prior to IPP2 tonemapping.

Try HDR 4000.

It never ends though.

If I use IPP2 at the Output DRT, it seems to also want to map the titles NITS down. Doesn't matter what I put in the "Grpahics white level," it's always getting remapped to a lower NIT. Thoughts?

Yes this is a known issue with project wide color management because they really are designed to provide a solid pipeline for scene referred data not so much display referred. You should be able to bypass color management on clips you don't want to pass through the color pipeline but for some Fusion titles and Fusion comps themselves I think it's still not optimal if I'm not mistaken.

Your alternative to global IPP2 management is to set it up manually. Unfortunately there is no option for IPP2 in the CST OFX node but using LUTs should kind of work well enough too. You can generate all the tonemap / rolloff versions of IPP2 LUTs using RED CineX Pro easy from the file menu.
Then setup a "default" YRGB project with RWG/Log3G10 as your timeline space. Then use groups to group all your camera footage and convert it to RWG/Log3G10 (if different source) on pre clip group tree and put the LUT in the post clip group tree. This way you exclude everything else you might need for your project from that color pipeline.

Even non Fusion titles. I would have figured this issue had been resolved - it's been known for a long time now, I remember reporting it close to 18 months ago? It was fixed for non-IPP2 workflows; guess this workflow was missed? It's so close... just the Output DRT needs fixing.
