Changing Working Folders

PostWed Feb 16, 2022 3:16 pm

When I first installed DVR (3 years ago) I was a complete newbie and made some bad choices for where things are stored. 200 projects later - I really need to get this sorted!

To one I am struggling with is the fact that I selected a bad location for my Media Store - let's call it "\BadPlace\Media Store"

I have set "Preferences | System | Media Storage Locations" to be "\GoodPlace" and that is now the ONLY location specified in that dialog box.

I close down DVR

I moved "\BadPlace" to "\GoodPlace" and deleted "\BadPlace"

When I restart DVR - "\BadPlace" and "\BadPlace\media" store is recreated. This is happening before I open any of my projects and while only the project manager is open.

How do I change "\BadPlace" to "\GoodPlace" ?

If it makes any difference - I am using the pro version, not the free version.

Thanks
Ian.

My first guess is to check Project Settings>Master Settings>Working Folders. Those are project specific and may need to be updated for every project, one at a time.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I have 200 projects!!!

But as I said this is happening before I even open a project. So presumable it's connected to the default "untitled project"?

Looking at Master Setting, for "untitled project" is still using
"\BadPlace\Media Store\CacheClip" and
"\BadPlace\Media Store\gallery" BUT
"\GoodPlace\Media Store\ProxyMedia"

I can't find any way to permanently change the setting for cache and gallery. When I do change it - I can only save "untitled project" to a new name that keeps the setting change, but after a restart, the original (default) "untitled project" still has the folders as listed above.

The default for Untitled is the first drive listed in Preferences>System>Media Storage.

You're not seeing that?

Yup that has been changed and once I changed that ProxyMedia changed to "GoodPlace" but the other two folders stayed with "BadPlace".

Ok, further update - I've been able to change the "untitled project" by updating the settings for my "default project" in presets to have the correct folder... BUT I still get \badplace\Media Store\.gallery recreated whenever I restart DVR.

Alright.

You're using the current 17.4.4? (Thinking maybe a bug that was since corrected.)

Further update - once I had edited ALL my stored profiles to the point to \GoodPlace\Media Store - then DVR stopped creating the folders in the wrong place on start-up.

HOWEVER... as has been pointed out, the moment I open an old project (as I do fairly regularly) the \BadPlace\ folder structure is recreated again - unless I manually edit the project to change the folders.

I've just counted up and I have 298 different projects in Davinci Resolve - is there any way to change those setting on mass? Or at least to automate that change?

Thanks
Ian.

Not that I'm aware. Those are Project Settings, so each project has to be changed once opened.

I am fighting this now as well.

I even went as far as updating the Paths inside the Project.db files, but alas, the projects don't even appear after those modifications. (Assuming the DB runs a checksum before loading, and barfs because of my changes).

Anyone have a quick way to update the Cache location on 100+ projects??

I don't think there is any quick way. I think it will have to be done one project at a time after opening.

The good news is that you can wait till you open that project to work on it. You don't have to change that ahead of time, or for older projects.
