Hi all, this is my first post, I’ve been using DaVinci Resolve for about a month (I got the Studio version a little over a week ago) and I have a question regarding moving clips with crossfades/transitions.

I made GIF’s to illustrate the desired behavior from Reaper and Vegas Pro (normal crossfade and dissolve transition). The clips can be overlapped to add a crossfade or transition and then either clip can be moved around without affecting the edge of the other clip. Is this kind of editing mode possible in DaVinci Resolve?

I found on the forum that Alt+Shift+drag will create a transition effect when dragging one clip over another, but this only works the first time when initially overlapping the clips. Trying to move clips around after the transition is added has varying degrees of problems.

A major problem is that moving clips in Selection Mode (even just one frame) can delete the transition entirely, which IMO should never happen. I move clips around all the time after adding transitions and I don’t want to lose any of the transitions. I really hope this gets fixed in a future update. I don’t want any effects to be removed unless I explicitly remove them myself. As shown in the third GIF, Vegas Pro preserves transitions even when the clips are completely separated (the transition is saved with the clip on the right).

The closest I’ve found is using Trim Edit Mode to move clips because at least this does not delete transitions, but this still isn’t ideal because the edge of the clip not being moved does not stay in place like it does in both Reaper and Vegas Pro.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure this out but I haven’t found a solution yet and any help will be greatly appreciated! If this isn’t currently possible, then I’ll make a request in the Feature Requests forum. A simple solution would be an “Auto Crossfade” mode (and button) to enable or disable this editing behavior.

Nope, still not possible. Basic editing on the Edit page seems to keep getting neglected in every update.

Weird that this still is not working in Fairlight page. I constantly need to swith to edit page where this is possible. If you use trim edit tool (T) and then select all clips with crossfades you want to move the fades remains intact while moving the clips. This is if you use trim edit tool hovering at the bottom of an audio track. It looks lite two parentheses with arrows on the outside.

Why is this feature not available in Fairlight page? Or maybe it is but I can't seem to find it?

I mentioned trim edit mode in my original comment and that is a different behavior than what I am asking for. Trim edit moves the entire crossfade, which moves the edge of the other clip not being moved. My request is for the clip not being moved to be completely left alone and to only adjust the length of the crossfade.

I agree completely. Yes this is what I request too very much. Very strange that it is not available in such a professional audio software in almost all other regards. This is perhaps the most basic feature that is a must as soon as you start working with crossfaded audio. I am also a bit confused that there is not more threads mentioning this lack of feature.

I totally agree. Even Fairlight doesn't do this on the audio side, which is just bizarre. I've used a lot of different DAWs I can't think of a single one that didn't have this. Usually it's a toggle button on the main toolbar because it is such a standard feature.

If you use Shift+Alt to drag one clip over another, you get an auto-crossfade that behaves exactly like I want. However, once you let go of the clip you cannot get this behavior anymore. Why not have a toggle button that enables this behavior permanently and will also work after you let go of the clip and then move it again? Resolve is already half-way there, it just needs to go the rest of the way.
