No audio after inactivity, other audio fine

Hey guys -

I've noticed an issue with Resolve where I'll be editing on my timeline and I'll step away for 15-30 minutes to do something. The computer doesn't go to sleep and I just leave it sitting on the timeline in the Edit tab. And then I'll come back and hit Play on the timeline and there will be no audio. The meters are moving but nothing comes out of the speakers.

Then I'll immediately launch YouTube to test my audio and I can hear it just fine.

I'll then exit out of Resolve, relaunch it and open my project again and audio is back.

I think this bug has been there a while as I remember running into this last year.

What audio hardware do you use?

Make sure the system is set to disable all low power/sleep/hibernate modes. Make sure CPU, monitors, hard drives, etc. remain fully powered at all times.

Hi Jim,
It's the audio card that came with my ASUS motherboard.
As mentioned, all other audio works. It's only Resolve that has the problem and it corrects itself as soon as I relaunch Resolve.

That's nor normal, though, which is why I suggested reviewing your Power settings.

Is this a dedicated editing system, or do you have non-editing software installed which may be causing an issue?

This is my dedicated video editing rig.

I don't know what you mean by it's normal when Windows sounds and browser sounds work fine. The problem is only in Resolve.

OK.

What settings do you have for Preferences>System>Video and Audio I/O>Audio I/O?

Though your settings haven't changed, try using the manual configuration to see if that makes a difference.

I see this bug has not been resolved.

I am getting an Audio Output pop-up error every time when my monitor sleeps and wakes.

I'm also curious if this issue has been figured out. I've been experiencing it as well.

After 15-20 minutes of inactivity, my computer screen will enter a power saving mode. If I have Davinci pulled up, when I return to keep working I see a notice similar to the screenshot above noting that my main audio output can't be found. All other audio on the computer works, just not within Davinci.

The only way I've found to resolve the issue is to exit the software, clear it from my processes in my task manager, then relaunch. The audio then plays fine.

I am also hoping for an update to fix this; have also experienced no audio output from davinci resolve windows version 18.0.4 build 5 after about 20 minutes of inactivity. As others have said, audio output still works fine from other apps e.g. web browsers, sound effects from windows system, etc. I also have an asus motherboard and nvidia gpu, however I have noticed this behavior whether I'm outputing audio through HDMI or through bluetooth headphones. The workaround has been to quit davinci resolve and relaunch, which restores audio.

This is still an issue for me when I come back and wake my computer up from sleep.

Whenever I take a break, I completely exit Resolve so I don't run into this issue.

It's strange that this bug has been open for so long. I still see some other bugs like having to recheck Show Full Clip Audio Waveform every time.

It may well be caused by allowing your computer to sleep. On waking not all processes within Resolve may automatically restart. This is from the manual.

It is also a good idea to change the usb ports to never power down as well.

I don't think the issue is the computer is going to sleep because when this happens, Windows audio works fine. Just open a browser and YouTube videos play fine. It's only Resolve that doesn't have audio.

There are a number of programs that will not wake up properly if the computer sleeps, Pro Tools for one. Just because other things work does not mean all programs will work. If it wasn't an issue it would not have that Power Settings page in the Resolve manual.
I think this is more of a Windows issue as I don't recall seeing Mac users with this problem.

As far as I know, Macs do not have the problem.

Multimedia Device handling on Windows is a nightmare in general. From my experience there's a pretty good chance that the OS messes up things here so I don't think there's a general solution.
However, if you are using an HDMI output to an AVR with nVidia HD Audio (as I do) and you are facing the same problem (no audio in DVR after a few minutes but also in other apps), just let me know.
There's a registry entry that needs to be changed and the problem goes away. I am not at my desk right now but can look it up later this day.
