Been considering these, but can't find anyone who sells these in Australia.

Not even sure which one is 'better' for an average user.


I was also wondering whether there are any plans / or if it's something in prospect - that new versions of these are going to come out.
- with the additional abilities offered by teh various generations of Resolve since the keyboard and speed editor were first released, and
- taking into account the various comments by YouTube Resolve content creators reviewers (Casey Farris, MrAlexTech, Billy Rybka etc) who've reviewed these products in the last few years.)
- with quality/,material improvements.

It's entirely possible that Blackmagic will add new capabilities to these keyboards - they have been known to do so with their other products and have even released updated "keycap kits" to match the new software functionality.

My view, neither. The Speed Editor was meant for Cut, which is a frustrating and awkward way to work. And the Keyboard is waaaaaaaaay overpriced.

Get a wired mechanical keyboard and vertical mouse for $100 or so.

As I am not a professional editor nor editing all the time, I prefer hardware control over keyboard shortcuts. I'm happily using the Speed Editor in the Edit page, (I don't use the Cut page), and it works extremely well for what I am doing.

My personal experience with the Speed Editor is that the wheel is what gives you the most value. Being able to scrub with it is very intuitive, and being able to hold down a key and then use the wheel to move the edit point around is very powerful and quick.

However, I find that you can't use the Speed Editor alone - you will want access to other features. I use it in combination with either a keyboard or keypad with custom keyboard shortcuts setup to access the other features you'll want to use often.

I use the speed editor all the time. The wheel and the active buttons make editing a lot more tactile and fun. I am retired, so time spent editing isn’t a profit making issue, although the setup is pretty fast.

+1 on the Speed Editor.

I'm not a professional editor, I'm retired. I have done a fair amount of editing, though and I used to teach Avid.

The Speed Editor is an excellent, even fun way to work, whether with the Cut Page or the Edit Page.

The jog wheel's connection to the timeline is visceral.

+1 Speed editor.

Use it all the time in the EDIT page. Never use the CUT page.

It's accurate, fast and easy to use in combination with re-mapped function keys on a regular keyboard. Sure beats carpel tunnel from using a mouse!

I'd combine the SE with a far cheaper keyboard like the LogicKeyboard Davinci Resolve Astra.

Agree. That’s what I have done now. I still have my trackball. I prefer the KB Covers latest keyboard (see above topic link). I had tried the LogicKeyboard DR Astra and did not like the quality of the key action. I actually popped off a couple of the key caps once.

I have found that I can do much more with a Stream Deck, and a mouse with a few programmable keys, and a shuttle deck express. I have the speed editor and it is great if you want to use it they way that BMD wants you to use it, and yes, the jog wheel is great, but the lack of customisation renders it's capabilities as half baked for serious users.

I also don't use the cut page. The idea of the wheel is what appeals to me most which is the reason for the question.

I really didn't want to pay that for the keyboard. (especially when locally it doesn't even include a studio license whereas the speed editor does. Weird)

Heck the speed editor is too expensive IMHO too but might still be better in the value-for-money stakes as compared with the keyboard.

Well, the build quality of both units from BM is surely superior.
Regarding cheapos, what about the one by Editors Keys?

Lots of inexpensive Speed Editors on eBay UK.

I would like the speed editor to have an sd card reader so we can view the clips and upload them from there.

The BM keyboards feels superior but heavy to lug around. I don't know about the Editors Keys. I have been using the one from KB Covers and it has been working for me... and feels like the Apple Magic Keyboard.

I like the Speed Editor. I never use the cut page nor the multicam. The device is kind of focused on that. I wish I could reprogram the multicam keys to do timecode entry. But other than that I'm trying to retrain myself to work with the left hand on the jog/shuttle and right hand on the Wacom tablet. I found that method very effective years ago. The jog/shuttle is good.

In the end everyone works a little differently. The drawback of this device is that you can't customize it to suit your needs. I think if I did creative editorial in the cut page it'd be excellent.

This is supposed to be an alternative to the SE, particularly if you're using the Edit page more than the Cut page. I've not tried it myself, but it looks interesting enough that I am thinking of giving it a try.

Yeah but only a new BM speed editor will get me the studio licence which I don't yet have.

I like the wheel on the speed editor. I wanted resolve studio so the extra $100 for it seemed ok. Then I bought a micro panel which also came with a license that I gave to a friend. I like that the speed editor is wireless so easy to have on a shelf and just use it when I want to. I think people don’t give the cut workflow a chance. I plan to explore it even though I am like most everyone else here it seems and am accustomed to the edit page type workflow. I like the idea of the cut page to get ideas down fast then move to the edit page. In the end I think I’ll always like having the wheel around which alone justifies the extra cost for me,

In that case you should get the Studio Licence and the Speed Editor comes free - or at least it used to.

Yep, Tony 'used to be' is right. It's now the other way around.

I was going to buy a Speed Editor for the free version of Studio (I still plan to!) but I picked one up very cheaply off eBay to zero out my Paypal account before closing it. I wasn't convinced it was much more than a gimmicky toy but I figured if it wasn't up to much I could sell it for what I paid for it.

I don't know if any of you ever played early first-person shooters like Quake? In the olden days you just played with the keyboard and a mouse was kind of optional, and then suddenly everyone was using "+mouselook" and you just steered yourself around with the mouse and used the keyboard to sidestep, run, and pick weapons. Well, the Speed Editor was (for me) that big of a difference in editing video.

If you've ever used old clunky tape-based editing or even certain hard disk audio editors with a jog/shuttle wheel, it's instantly familiar. When I gave our teenager a shot of it to have a go of Resolve on her PC and needed to do some video work, going back to using a mouse was like trying to type with my nose.

If you were going to buy Studio anyway you may as well track down a Speed Editor and get the whole thing. If you weren't, then the Speed Editor is a good reason to spring for it.
