Audio Effects Not Updating

PostFri Apr 29, 2022 11:32 pm

Hi all

When I apply Resolve's built-in audio effects (such as the equalizer) to a clip, I cannot hear the difference immediately. I have to restart Resolve to hear the the effect work.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I could use third party plugins, but my personal preference is to use Resolve's built in plugins as much as possible to increase stability.

Cheers
Matt

Just tested and it is working fine here. The only thing I have found is that in the Edit page there is a slight delay when, for instance, you move the controls. This does not happen in the Fairlight page. You should not have to reboot to hear what you are doing/have done.
What version of Resolve are you using, and what are your system specs?

Thanks Charles

That's odd. I am putting effects to the clip in the timeline/edit view, rather than the Fairlight tab.

I am using Resolve Studio 18 Beta.

My specs are pretty solid, MSI motherboard, Intel CPU, 32GB RAM, 6 GB video card etc (and my PC handles most visual effects/Fusion reasonably well).

Maybe it's a Studio 18 Beta glitch? Not sure.

EDIT: One thing I should make clear. If I activate the equalizer, I can hear the difference immediately. But if I tweak the settings in the equalizer, then I cannot hear the difference unless I reboot Resolve. I noticed this issue in the 'Pitch' plugin as well (and the work around I found was to drag and drop the audio effect, 'Pitch'. However, it does not look like Resolve has a drag and drop EQ effect I can use as a work around).

There is a separate forum for version 18 issues. Maybe worth reporting.

I've had the same problem in v17 with VST's in the Edit page (I haven't spent a whole lot of time in Fairlight yet, so I don't know if it works any better there). Resolve would frequently ignore changes in the VST and even toggling it on/off made no difference. It seemed like it could have been a caching issue, but deleting all cache didn't fix it. It would randomly start working and then stop working a little while later. At a point I finally gave up and moved on to something else. I haven't tested this in the beta due to other issues I've had with the beta.

This is one of those problems where the cause is hard to pin down. I too am now on 18 beta and cannot reproduce this behaviour either with the native, or third party plugins.

Though, as I've said, I use Pro Tools for audio post, I do occasionally use Resolve end to end. This is the Fairlight page for my channel trailer. The timeline is 50fps UHD, and there are two native and two third party track plugins in use plus fader automation, and it's all working as it should.

Thanks Charles and everyone else.

Third party plugins seem to work, just not the in-built plugins in the Edit page (but I think Fairlight works fine).

All the native plugins are working when applied to clips in my Edit page. The same goes for those in the Inspector. This is on both 18 betas. I've not had any problems with past Resolve versions either. So I am at a loss as to the cause.
If the clip is on its own track I would suggest using the EQ in the Fairlight page. It will give you a more comprehensive equalizer.
An excellent free third party EQ plugin is the TDR Nova, You will find it here. https://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-nova/

I feel like I am the only person for whom none of the Fairlight effects as well as trying manually in the audio tab seem to make any discernable difference. I try different settings, waiting, restarting. Still a ton of noise and rumble, no matter what. Okay, I am not a sound master, but the supposed changes couldn't possibly be that subtle. Confused.

I'm facing the same issue. If I try to change pitch or use built-in equalizer it's not updating real time.
I found a workaround - if I change the value of Speed Change tool (even if it's not active) somehow it forces update.
It's an annoying bug though, and would be wonderful if it was looked into

I have seen Effects added in Fairlight (Davinci and 3. party) that doesn’t show up from the start in Inspector when switching to Edit mode. After a while it worked OK. I will see if I can pinpoint the circumstances when this occurs.

I have the same issue with EQ on the edit page, same goes for pitch settings. VST Neutron EQ works fine on every page though.

I wonder if anyone from Blackmagic reads this forum...
I was hoping the latest update would fix this, but unfortunately - it didn't...

Here's a recording of how the issue looks like:

To be honest I've been thinking of buying the full version of Resolve, because there's a lot I like about the package, but amount of stuff like this prevents me from doing so... And I really hope it's gonna change

I am having the same issue. Audio effects, including the built in EQ are not working on the edit page or fairlight page. One thing I noticed is that this only seems to be a problem on large projects. I created a brand new project and dragged a couple clips into the timeline. Everything works fine in that project. It seems like the problem has something to do with large projects. Mine has about 25 TB worth of footage and 169 timelines in it.

Does anyone know if this issue still occurs in v19? I didn't install the beta and I'm going to keep an eye on the forums for a bit before giving the official v19 release a go.

For anyone with problems, if you don't list your system details including version of Resolve, OS, and GPU and its driver version, etc, plus logs, there is next to nothing anyone can do to isolate the problem.

In both cases, with Resolve open you can select Create Diagnostic Logs on Desktop in the Help dropdown menu.

New to the forum, but not DR. I've got hundreds of hours over 3 years, the last of which in Studio with Speed Editor - but I still feel like a rookie.

I ran into this problem for the first time today (V 18.6 - I'll do a sig with specs when I have more time). I ended up having to copy/paste audio attributes to a bunch of clips when I decided to tweak EQ settings late in a project. The initial clip where I made the changes worked normally - a little choppy, but more or less real time updating - but when I pasted attributes to virgin clips, no changes were forthcoming - the settings/curves were identical to the master, but even turning the EQ on/off made no difference, nor did a restart.

I finally tried Slivinsons workaround above, and it worked. If you have a ton of cuts like I did, it's less painful if you move to Fairlight, select a large group of clips (that don't have any Speed Change applied), nudge any setting on the Speed Change controls, then reset to default. Voila, all the clips will update to the new EQ. The only problem is, you can no longer apply changes in real time to any of the clips without doing the same dance each time.

Quick specs: Win 10 Pro, Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi, 9th Gen i7, 32 GB RAM, AMD RX 5700 XT (8GB), multiple drives: HDD, SSD, m.2

Just wanted to join the forums to state that I am also having this issue. The EQ applies only after I exit and reload Davinci. Super frustrating.

If anyone wants any information about my specs to help troubleshoot, let me know.

Just adding to the tally - same issue here.
Heavy project, equaliser makes no difference in the Edit page, nor in Fairlight page.
The track equalizer seems to work well on the first clip played in my test loop only, then no effect (and the live metering in the track equaliser window goes dead once the playhead moves to the next clip).
I see this thread is already 3 years old - abandon all hope?

EDIT - Also confirming speed change gets everything to update for me.

But sad to report another bug that might be related to the speed change hack. After performing this hack a couple of times, the audio clip in question is now misaligned, despite the speed having been reset to 100 percent. The waveform seems to have shifted to the left so a portion of the desired sound is now before the in point. Grrrr....

FINAL EDIT (I swear it is the last)

Want to reproduce the drift? Just click the revert to default button next to the Change Speed control a bunch of times in a row, and watch your waveform sail off into the insouciant past, a little further with each click.

I can confirm that the problems start if the audio speed was somehow changed and hasn't been reset a bunch of times. Here you can see that nothing works until you reset the speed of the clip:

And this does not only concern the EQ - Stereo separation does not work is such a scenario either.

A colleague of mine has just confirmed this issue in 20 Beta 3. He got it immediately after he had turned on and off voice isolation.

Blackmagic, please, investigate it.
