The improved Magic Mask

PostMon May 02, 2022 3:24 am

I just saw this demo :

It's pretty impressive!

I tested it myself now, and I realize that the "object mask" do a better job than the "person mask"... while used on a person :)

I mean, the edges are not even comparable between the two in my tests.

Are they gonna be merged together in the final version of Resolve? Or are there very specific use cases for the "person mask" that object mask can't handle?

The person mask is there for legacy projects as well as for cases when you need to isolate specific parts of a person. We expect Object Mask to be used mostly moving forward.

I tested on some well shot footage (people against a fairly clean background) from a TV commercial. Outstanding result. very clean edges without any flickering. As an old-school editor of 35 years, I'm finally excited by a new feature! Now can we have some proper Edit Page keyframe smoothing please? I know it's only been 12 years I've been asking!

I could never get the old Magic Mask to give me anything useable, but in limited testing the new Object mask does seem a lot more successful. Good job!

I agree, this new magic mask really is useful.
I've had one particular rotoscoped clip that has been a nightmare for literally years. I tested it with this, and it was done, and useable, in a few seconds.

Would be nice if it was available, along with depth map, on the Fusion page.
I know I'm always asking 4 more, but eh it's BMD not Adobe.

Depth Map is available as new tool in the Fusion page.

My guess is that Color had a better foundation and supported OFX plugins better so that's where the cool new toys have showed up, but as you say it makes a lot of sense to put them -- with additional outputs -- into Fusion. And I would bet some time this year they will have a release with love for Edit and Fusion. Just my theory, though.

True, true
Resolve was, and still is, an amazing grading tool, and the other pages have been added later to become an universal tool.
