12th Gen Intel CPUs w integrated graphics and nvidia GPUs?

PostTue May 10, 2022 2:48 pm

Can anyone report on performance, as above? CPUs in this line would include the 12700K or 12900K.

Does the integrated GPU co-exist without conflict with the 30 series nvidia GPUs? Can you make use of quick sync?

Has anyone had to (or chosen to) disable the integrated graphics?

No but the way to make use of it very simply, would be to use the HDMI port from the CPU motherboard, not the GPU card.

Thanks, but that's not what I'm asking. There can be Resolve performance calamities when running an onboard GPU, in addition to a third-party GPU. The question is whether these two GPUs happily co-exist in Resolve, including quick sync.

In theory they should be both active. You might need to go into the bios and turn it on. My understanding is Intel guidance to the motherboard makers has been at least since 11th gen to leave the IGPU active. They don't all listen. For example every bios upgrade on my 11th gen I need to go into the Asus bios and flip the switch. Not a hardship but you need to do it.

The other issue is you really should get the drivers direct from Intel. Microsoft tends to be months behind.

NB all the above assumes you aren't asking about an OEM. Dell , HP or Lenovo might add their own complexity.

If you've been following along with the ever delayed Intel Arc GPUs they take advantage of the IGPU for hyper encode. That's likely the reason Intel has been pushing companies to no longer turn off the IGPU if you insert a discrete card.

I don't remember the Resolve release number but they've released at least one version supporting hyper encode. That more than implies they all work together.

I use the IGPU to decode HEVC 4.2.2 since nothing else does and that works fine

Sorry, but the reason I asked for reports on "performance" is that the "theory" isn't going to help. Intel guidance is not Resolve guidance.

So again..... Can anyone report on actual experience running Resolve with both GPUs enabled?

I had to disable the iGPU in my 7th gen Intel processor because when editing 4K footage (using a GTX1060/6) a weird memory "runaway" would happen whereby Resolve (15.3) would sometimes just consume all the available memory and then fill the swap file until everything crashed.

Things may be better now with later versions of Resolve and/or Intel iGPUs but their obviously *can* be conflicts in some configurations.

Best advice: try it out and see if you have problems with your own system.

BM over the last 18 months has released at least two versions that require the IGPU to be active. The last one being hyper encode but the support of HEVC 4.2.2 was even more important.

I see this thread is several months old, but I have been testing the IGP in my i9-13900k alongside my 3090ti. As of right now, the playback performance shows a marginal increase in avg fps when I use the IGP as the display driver.

I built a gaming pc (which is also my backup in case my work laptop dies) and while not a 12th gen, it's a 13th gen 13700k with an NVidia 3080 gpu so close enough to your test case. Resolve works perfectly on this setup.

You definitely want to keep the Intel gpu enabled if you use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 though as the NVidia doesn't support hardware decoding that. That's the format I film in and I did a test just to see what would happen if I disabled the Intel gpu on my gaming rig and Resolve performance went to ****, my little Dell XPS 15 with 11th gen cpu and Nvidia 3050ti was outperforming it in that scenario. Re-enabling the Intel gpu on my gaming rig makes it destroy my laptop once again for performance.

So if you use that particular flavor of HEVC, then an 11th gen or later Intel gpu is basically a must, along with an NVidia gpu for my faster encoding. I'll upgrade to an NVidia 4090 once I can find one at msrp.

I'm building a pc for resolve editing and is the 13900K worth the extra bucks compared to a slightly slower Intel processor or one of the 12000 series?

If money is the primary concern, then no. You could easily work with a slower processor. If it is within the budget...it is definitely worth it. This thing is a brute. I have yet to make this thing choke on a project. I only wish I had the budget to upgrade my 3090ti to a 4090.
