Help me upgrade my system for resolve studio.

PostTue May 17, 2022 9:13 am

Hi.
In the last 2 weeks I’m researching about upgrading or getting a new system for my work.
I Mainly doing short stuff for social media, using built in fusion effects and titles.
My camera capable of 4k h.265 4:2:2 (xt4) but I’m shooting 1080p h.264 for most of my works.
I’m using currently 3400g with rx570 4gb with resolve studio.
Sometimes I have problem with smooth scrolling 1080p videos and slow rendering times when using fusion, time flow, titles, grain and stuff like that.

1st question is what is better, amd or intel?
How many cores and what is more important single core or more cores?
Also which gpu will be enough for me?
Not sure between 3060 ti Al the way to 3080.
Thanks guys

I find Resolve (with h.265 source footage) using more cores at 20-50% than loading a single core unlike gaming scenario.
Also I upgraded from an RTX2070 to a 3080FE and or the first time the experience of editing and grading is smoother than before - based on that I would say the 3060 wouldn't cut it. I also found last week that with 2.7k 4:3 footage my GPU vram usage is closer to 8GB although on-paper calculations tell you 4GB is enough for 4k editing.. so the 10GB vram is a definite plus!

Thanks. I guess I’ll save for 3080.
What about the cpu?
Intel or amd?
6-12 cores?

If there’s any 10 bit 4:2:2 H.265 in your future, definitely Intel. AMD is lagging in this point.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

a 12600k not the kf is a good value choice. Go to the Puget systems and read their various blog posts.

Like a lot of these questions the answer is it depends. Not just on source material but what you're hoping to do with it. Some things are much more resource intensive than others. If all you do is trim 264 to size and render it out you might not even need a GPU really. If OTOH you need NR,Magic mask and who knows what even a 3080 might not be that powerful.
