Cannot use GPU to render 5K 360 (VR) Works with native

PostThu May 19, 2022 2:23 pm

Hello,

I am making my first VR video using native video from an Insta360 One R camera and fusion Panomap. I have successfully rendered it using the native encoder, but when I select my Nvidia CPU I get a message from DR to select a different resolution or encoder. The render using native encoder pegs my CPU at 100% while the GPU is around 5%. One of the reasons I bought the studio version was to use my Nvidia GPU for faster renders, and I am not getting that benefit at this resolution.

I'm wondering if maybe my graphics card is not up to the task? The Nvidia specs page for my G-force 1070 card says it will do up to 7680 x 4320 @ 60hz. If this card is not adequate, any suggestions would be welcomed.

I am using the paid studio version of DR. My video render settings are MP4, H.264 codec, 5760 x 2880 at 29.97 frame rate, quality restricted to 80,000 kb/s. Appreciate any help. Let me know if any additional info or specs are needed.

Thanks,
Alan

That's for displays, likely doesn't apply to NVENC.

You might have to use Native on this one.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Ok, thank you I see that now. Why might I have to use native on this one? I am open to upgrading the graphics card if that will result in being able to utilize the GPU as intended. I just don't know 1) if the card is indeed the issue and 2) if so, what card would solve the problem. Any insight is appreciated.

What does the error message really say?

You can do some research about the encoding options that are available for nVidia cards. Those specs will be general, not specific to Resolve.

Wording may not be exact, but it was a small pop-up window that appeared when I tried to add the render to the render queue - it basically said "Your render cannot be completed, please select a different resolution or encoder."

Maybe the codec u picked can’t render the resolution u picked.

NVENC:
h.264 doesn't support that high a resolution.
Try h.265.

Thank you! This turns out to be exactly correct. I changed the codec to H.265 and it is now rendering using Nvidia encoding. My CPU is still pegged at 100%, but the GPU is now between 9 and 12% where before it was a 2-3%, so I guess this is an improvement. I am not sure what challenges I may run into sharing and/or uploading a 265 file to social media, but I will cross that bridge next.

In hindsight, this is totally logical and I don't know why it didn't jump out at me earlier. However, I am only a hobbyist at this and it was my first try making a VR video and also first time rendering at more than 4K. So, thanks again for the help. I have learned something new :)
