Video formats

I'm *extremely* new to DaVinci Resolve. I'm running the free version on Arch to try it out. My desktop has a 5950X processing with 64GB RAM, and a lowly Zotac RTX 3060 (an Asus 3090 is arriving tomorrow... the 3060 was bought last year when GPUs were unavailable everywhere).

I setup DaVinci Resolve 17, but when I add some GoPro videos, I just see a a blank black screen. Reading around, I see that some formats are only supported on the paid version (which I will eventually get if I like the editing experience), but I'd have thought common video formats would work. I also got a course on DaVinci and the content videos all had the same result - I can add them, but it's all black. I'm wondering if this is indeed due to the limitations of the free version, or if there's something wrong with my Linux setup.

The codec information is below. Is this supposed to work on the free version of DaVinci Resolve 17?

From what I remember the limits of free version codecs support is on 10 bit and h265 codecs, may be that linux version had some quirk about codec of GoPro

A good way to evaluate Resolve is to go through the Beginner's Guide, which has associated lessons and media.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

You're going to need to transcode that. It's time you learned to love ffmpeg.

Thanks... I'm trying to understand what format is and isn't supported without transcoding. What part of the codec details points to the necessity for transcoding? I've tried some 2K, 4K videos from GoPro, as well as some sample mp4 videos from an online class. They all come up black. I'm happy to use ffmeg to get to a format that'll load in the free version to try the thing out before paying for Studio, but want to know if it's an issue with the codec, or my OS setup. For ffmpeg, what output format would you recommend for importing into DaVinci free?

I transcoded one file that wasn't working using ffmpeg, and it worked. That made me think it's a codec issue. I went ahead and bought studio and installed that. But to my surprise, even with studio, the gopro files, the training course files - nothing works. I'm attaching the log archive here. The main issue seems to be a series of:

Code: Select all
0x7f4b669b5640 | IO.Audio             | ERROR | 2022-05-21 02:33:30,248 | Failed to decode clip <path/to/file.MP4>, track: 0, position: 0 - Failed to decode the audio samples.

Another update... I installed studio 17, and all the videos DO import, but there's no audio, and the logs show the same error as with 18 beta 3. Logs attached again.
