Bought Resolve 17 and meant to buy Resolve 18

PostSun Jun 26, 2022 4:01 pm

Hello all!
I accidentally bought 17 and meant to buy 18. I don't see where I can buy 18 so I guess it's not out.
Will my 17 automatically upgrade to 18 or will I have to refund and buy 18 when it comes out?

Thank you

Even though BMD doesn't say that all future upgrades will be free, they have been free for a long time and your 17 license should work when 18 comes out, you can also try the 18 beta right now.

You can download it here:

Resolve 18 is currently a public beta but it is on version 5 already so it may be considered to be pretty much there by now by many users and Youtube independent trainers.

Switching from 17 to 18 may be confusing for you if you are unfamiliar with Blackmagic's way of doing things regarding how the database works and how to backup restore etc. If you are part way through a few projects using 17 and then upgrade to 18 you may inadvertently screw things up.

So I would say go straight for 18 - which is what I'm using.

Any company can change their pricing plans obviously, but there have been no indications that the perpetual license may change to charges for future upgrades - quite the opposite.

These trainers among many others are using 18:

The middle link does not appear to be working direct in this thread at present but it is working in Youtube. Search for Casey Faris - he has a complete crash course on 18

Resolve will never automatically update.

That's a good thing. ;)

There is a setting in Preferences that allows the software to notify you of an update, but that update will always need to be done manually.

The license is not so much version specific. It works on them all.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

We're still using a couple of dongles we bought with Resolve 8. So far, they still work.
