R5 8k raw playback problems

Playback of 8k raw is choppy.

I did see a video where someone with an RTX 2070 play back 8k red raw fine but that was on windows. (

I'm running Davinci Resolve Studio 17.4.6 Build 4

The file size is 32gb.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz

This is a workstation card. It's like a 3070 TI in terms of rt/tensor cores/cuda cores but with 2x the vram and a slower clock speed.

I have 32jiggawats of ram.

This is a really fast nvme drive that's way faster than a regular ssd. So it wouldn't be that.

Red raw has GPU hardware acceleration. Canon Raw does not.

You will also see BRAW is faster than Canon raw as Braw is partially debayered in camera to avoid the Red Patent.

Use 1080p, lowbitrate optimized media for timeline edits where you need speed. Switch back to raw files for color grade where you need accuracy.

And then, RedRAW from older models is decoding faster in fractional resolutions, being wavelet based.
Canon RAW is not, AFAIK.

Is it just not possible or canon has been lazy.

I'm did do a 4k optimized media, but I'm not editing them, just coloring it. (it took like 6+ hours or so.) I shot in clog3 also. So I turned off the optimized media and am now just trying to color it.

I'll have to find it but I thought I saw a video of c raw being played on a macbook or something.

I know the OP said it's not the drive but it may be overheating causing throttling. The OP doesn't mention any other drives. If the media is on the only drive anything else accessing the drive might cause the slowdown.

Right. Data rate of Canon RAW in 8 K is not negligible.

My nvme drive has like a read / write of 3200MB and 1900MB

Is it possible to convert it to something else like maybe prores raw or something else?

You can’t convert into any RAW, but you can use ProRes, DNxHR or CineForm.
Will be huge in 8K for good quality, though.

This 12 bit 8k raw video is 77gb
The video is just over 4 minutes long.
