Is My Strategy Between DR & Final Cut Stupid?

PostSun Jul 03, 2022 12:40 am

Short version: it's now over 3 years into a business development, and still pre-launch. Early 2021 when I bought a new computer, I bought Final Cut and proceeded to purchase a bunch of MotionVFX Plugins...then I got deep into BlackMagic cameras, gear, and quickly figured out Resolve was a lot better. However, I spent something like 5 or $600 on plugins prior to that, with the intention of it making my life easier when throwing together YouTube videos. Now I have a video that is finally finished and ideally want to insert a few of them onto the final product.

What I've done (and what my plan has been) was render out a ProRes master of my final Resolve project, with the intention of then loading the render into Final Cut, sticking my plugins on, and then render out the final composite from Final Cut. However...is there a better/smarter/more effective way? Does anyone else here ever need to work with Final Cut? And if so, is there a better way to be doing this?

Regrettably, about 2 or 3 months after I had made a full commitment to learning Resolve, MotionVFX introduced a bunch of stuff for Resolve that I'd already purchased for Final Cut. I emailed them to see if anything could be worked out but of course I was SOL. So under the circumstances....any suggestions on the best way to do what I want to do now?

Call it "a learning experience," and if you prefer Resolve to FCPX, switch completely to Resolve.

I use both. FCPX for editing and Resolve for colour grading. Using both will allow much more functionality than either can do alone. XML exchange between them is very good too.

Drop me a PM and I'll send you an article on round-tripping between the two. Actually, when you know how to avoid a few pitfalls, it works much better than between Premiere and DR.
(It'll be in German, but there's always DeepL.)
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Take the hit and buy the effects for Resolve.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I'll use a workaround until I'm seeing at least something coming in instead of completely going out, but all good perspective to have received

There is a table in the Resolve User Guide that lists the compatible items when using XML transfers.

Hey

Not stupid but more & more useless, I'd say...
I don't know what kind of plug-ins you bought at MotionVFX, but assuming it's not LUTs and it's not in the field of grading, at least insert what you want on the TL before the final grade, THEN export to Resolve and grade...

Now, coming from FCP7, I personally noticed that it's more efficient to do everything in Resolve. So I kept Motion (in which MotionVFX stuff generally works too) to be able to use cool titles and graphics templates anymore, and that's all...

So never-ending roundtrips is not relevant anymore for me.
