How is vertical 'normal' for YouTube?

He asked how do you make a normal video into portrait, he didn't state that they were the norm. They are becoming more popular on Youtube as Youtube Shorts.

couldn't really care, but when casey faris and others start using it in their youtube clips, it really does annoy me - detail gets lost, etc., ok, if you simply want a talking head, ok, but otherwise, meh.

I dislike vertical video on Youtube, Instagram, Tiktok, wherever it may exist. I know that I am not the only target demographic so I know it is probably here to stay, at least until the next "weird" trend.

Like you, Leslie, I'm not the target audience and I hate to watch any video that's worth watching on a tiny screen. But let the kids have some fun.

To the OP's actual question - look at Smart Reframe. That should help with formatting your landscape video as portrait.

To compete with TikTok. You can't stand on principals when somebody is running away with the market.

That seems it's just rotating the video, but I want to crop it.

And to everyone who was complaining about vertical videos/youtube shorts, its like a 6 second clip, and the short algorithm is different.
