Scarlett 2i2 Not Working as Input in Fairlight

PostSun Jul 03, 2022 7:01 am

I am running a Scarlett 2i2 into a Mac Studio with DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 Public Beta 5. I can successfully record in Voice Memos (Mac App) using the mic and Scarlett. Firmware is up to date and sample rate is 48kHz. I have set the Audio IO in Resolve to use the Scarlett for record and playback. I have patched the track in Fairlight to channel one of the Scarlett - same as I did back in Resolve 17 on my old iMac. Levels are fine on other apps, but I get nothing in Fairlight when I arm the track and record.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any ideas are much appreciated.

Confirm that Resolve is granted permission to access the device:
macOS System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone

Confirm that a valid storage volume is configured:
Project Settings > Capture and Playback > Capture > Save clips to
⟦ Mac Pro 7,1 Rack ⊕ 16-core 3.2GHz ⊕ 32GB RAM ⊕ Radeon 580X • Resolve Studio 18.1.1 • macOS 12.6.1 ⟧
⟦ Fairlight Console (DAE-3 Bay) • Fairlight Audio Accelerator • Intensity Pro 4K ⊕ Desktop Video 12.4 ⟧

Thank you, Reynaud! I forgot that Monterey has higher security requirements. Works perfect now.

Just bumping this as I'm having a similar issue with a Scarlett 2i2 Gen2 plugged into a USB hub, connected to an M1 Max MacBook Pro running DaVinci Resolve 18.

I've checked the system settings, all good, and tried multiple capture locations, all with enough storage and still no bueno. It's even working in Adobe Audition and Quicktime, but just empty sound files through DaVinci. Any ideas?

As a sanity check, on the Fairlight page, select ADR, then Setup in the ADR area.

In the Setup area, select a Record Track.

Then select the Record Source.

Do you see the audio meter on the left edge of the selected audio record track moving?

If that works, in Resolve Preferences - User - Fairlight: select the "Enable auto patching" option. That should make audio recording simpler. Assuming you have the current Resolve 18.0.4 version installed.

Hey Dwaine, thanks for getting back to me on this one; I've headed to the ADR panel and 'Record Source' reads 'None' and is greyed out so I can't select anything...

I've tried the interface through a couple of different hubs, changing the input and output in Preferences and re-patching to multiple different tracks—still no luck. I've managed to get my AirPods to patch and record though, so it does seem to be something with the interface itself.

And, yeah, just to confirm, running 18.0.4.

The Record Source reads None and is grayed out because you did not select a Record Track.

Ah, that's my bad, thanks Dwaine. With that said, and the 2i2 patched, that track armed for record, there are no meters... I feel like it's some kind of driver issue with the M1 Macs as this worked fine on my Intel Mac with the same setup.

I have a Scarlett Solo connected to USB port on a TB3 to USB/HDMI/CF Card/Ethernet adapter, that is plugged into one of the TB3 ports on my Mac M1 Pro MBP system, and it works fine as a Fairlight ADR source.

Can you send a screen shot of your Mac Audio MIDI Setup - Audio Devices - Input page with the Scarlett 2i2 selected?

Ah, very strange then! I've posted it below. I've tried changing this from 48 to 192 and 41, restarting Resolve each time with no luck either. Still working just fine in other apps (Audition, Discord, Descript...)

See that microphone icon on the Scarlett? Make that go away and then it will work.

So, that kind of worked in that it didn't work at all, but it showed me what was actually happening:
In Audio Devices, I moved the sound input to the webcam. I restarted Resolve, just to be sure, selected the Scarlett as the input and patched the channels—the meters start a-boucin'! However, it's not coming from the Scarlett, it's coming from the webcam. So I've gone back to MIDI, reset that, gone to Resolve, set the input to the webcam and low and behold, it's the Scarlett coming through.
Unplug the webcam, select Scarlett—sure enough it's the Scarlett coming through.

It seems Resolve sees the webcam as the Scarlett whenever it's plugged in! No idea what that's about, but it does now appear to be solved(?)!

Thanks for the help nudging me in the right direction, much appreciated. I think I'll just leave my webcam unplugged from now on.

I have that exact issue on 16 inch M1 Max MacBook Pro. None of that solved it. Focusrite works in all other software except resolve. Looks like there really is a Resolve issue here.
