Colors Change After Render in Place

PostSun Aug 14, 2022 9:19 pm

I’ve been using Render in Place for applying film grain over slowed clips.
This latest project I’m going for a teal/orange look (an amateur one at best), but I notice the colors and gamma shift when clips are Rendered in Place. I don’t think it involves my Render Settings because when I render the project from the Delivery page, the grade of the clips that aren’t rendered on the Timeline is fine.

Let me know if I’m wrong about the Render Settings.

Forgot to mention my Render in Place settings:

Format: QuickTime
Codec: H.265
Encoding Profile: Main10
0 Frame Handles
Video Effects, Fusion Comp, and Color Grading Effects are all checked.

I chose H.265 and Main10 because that’s what I render the project to.

Update: Still having this issue. Seems to be adding magenta to the whole clip(s) every time.
Anyone know of a workaround to getting consistent film grain? (I’m looking to get grain that runs at 23.976fps over slowed clips.)

Can you share your project settings, timeline settings or any color management on clip level?

Did you try deferent formats for the render in place?

A Data/Video Levels issue maybe?

I'm seeing more of a saturation/luminance change.

What if you Render-In-Place to a format other than H.264? What do you see if you check the image on scopes? What are your Project Settings, specifically Color Management and Video/Full Data Levels?

Not exactly sure what's causing it but in general you may want to consider render-in-place operations in intermediate formats so you don't double compress to a deliverable format. DNxHR HQX/444 or ProRes 422HQ/444 if on Mac are better options. Try those and see if they work.

Wasn’t expecting replies since I didn’t see any for a while haha.
You all were right, since I’ve never rendered in place before I thought I had to use the same settings as the final render settings (H.265 on the Deliver page). I’ve since been using ProRes422 HQ and it matches what’s seen on the Timeline very well. Thanks!

I like the film grain in the halation tool. it correctly applies based on luminescence.

If you look at real film you will see almost no grain in highlights and more in shadows.

its also only subtle changes in color, most of the grain is in brighter/darker specs. Not sure how any overlay could do that.

I can't believe how bad the grain in lightroom is, it looks nothing like film :x

Yes, Halation is doing a pretty good job.
But the best approach I've seen is the fully adjustable Grain Response Curve in FilmConvert Nitrate.
