Something went wrong with my Project Database upgrade 17>18

PostMon Aug 15, 2022 12:56 pm

I know that I should have been more present when I updated from v17 to v18, but I was not.

Don't ask me how exactly, but as a result of my absent-mindedness, I somehow ended up with an empty Project Manager.

I do have a complete backup of my Application Support/Blackmagic Design/Resolve 17 folder (see attached screencap), with all my projects in it, but what is my most direct path to importing them all into Resolve 18 (short of having to import every single project manually)?

If someone knows of a way to do so, please enlighten me...as always, I greatly appreciate the help of the community!

Sorry, the question omits an important part:

In the v17 Backup folder, all Projects are in .db format, which v18 doesn't appear to "see" when trying to import one of those projects.

So, how do I import the .db projects into v18?

Hopefully others will chime in with more detail but I would think you could copy the 'Resolve Projects' folder to some other location on a fast, internal drive and attach to it as a new library (previously called database). You may have to drop (disconnect) from your current library that failed to upgrade but maybe not. When you try to connect to this relocated library, I would expect Resolve 18 will ask to upgrade it...

I may have some of the details wrong here but hopefully the general idea will work...

thanks for that piece of advice, Steve...I shall try to do that.

After a more granular search, I discovered that I did do a backup of the local database in v17 as recent as April of this year...it's a 27,1MB file called "Local Database.resolve.diskdb", but when I drop it into my v18 Project Manager, it asks whether I'd like to create a new Project Library from it, which I did, calling it simply "v17", and then imports rather quickly (2-3 seconds), ending up with just an "Untitled Project" and a request to update the database, which I did, pointing it to a new folder in my v17 backup folder, which then contains the complete folder structure with my v17 projects, that I already have a backup of.

Let me try your tip, Steve...anything to get me closer to getting all my projects and sequences back.

Would temporarily installing v17 be an option, and using it to export the appropriate backup?

I'm not sure if you can go back - there seems to be a lot of complexity to your description. Resolve 17 won't be able to work with your upgraded libraries so unless you can revert your system to a state before the library upgrade, I'm not exactly sure how you would use v17. If you could then creating a database backup from v17 should work (as you have already tested this workflow).

Sorry - not really my area of expertise which is why I was hoping someone else would chime-in.

I would simply copy the Resolve Disk Database folder from the backup, delete the corresponding folder in v18 and paste the backup folder in the same location (with exactly the same folder name -- not "copy"). That should prompt you for a database upgrade when you reopen 18. And all projects should be present, if it's successful.

Be warned, this advice is coming from someone who hasn't done the 18 upgrade. But since your 18 installation has no projects and you have nothing to lose at this point -- you can always uninstall and re-install -- it may be worth trying.

Or, if you want something even safer, copy the Resolve Disk Database folder, rename it to anything but "Resolve Disk Database", and using the database manager in v18, connect to it, which will also ask you to name it (use the new name you just created). When that's done successfully, you'll be prompted to upgrade it to 18. That will leave you with the new disk-based database, and an empty default database, which will still be called "Resolve Disk Database".

Yes - this is a clearer/simpler description of what I was thinking.

I couldn't get Steve's suggestion to work (but thank you, all the same, Steve!), but when I tried your tip, John, v18 did indeed offer to upgrade my Projects and came up with all of them, as they were before (at least at first inspection).

Lots of paths have changed, since, so I will need to do a lot of re-linking, but that was to be expected.

I've got my work cut out for me, but thanks so much to you both for getting me back on my way!

Got *some* of it working, but realised that various backups contain unique data and Projects, so I now have to figure out what was done when, and export Bins to import into one master Project/Database...it boggles the mind, sometimes.

Frankly, I must admit that I don't really understand the Project Manager, what comprises disk databases, and project databases, what attaching and detaching from databases entails, and how to run parallel project databases...so much to learn in regard to that important aspect of Resolve :/
