BMD believes majority of users are on Mac?

I ran across this quote in the BMD Davinci Resolve 18 user manual.

"Since the majority of DaVinci Resolve users currently appear to be on macOS, "

I would like to have an informal survey of the users on this group to see what the proportion is for Windows/Mac users.

Windows+2

4 x Macs here. I think Blackmagic can tell how many copies are downloaded, but not necessarily how many are installed. I think they can tell how many copies of Resolve Studio are registered.

I'm a new Resolve Studio user, learning Resolve as a Vegas user of several years. I am on PC, Win10, i12700K processor, AMD 6700XT video card. First time on this board. Also, I'm not a full-time video editor.

To me, it feels like Resolve is heavily Mac centric, regardless of the outcome of this survey. The biggest complaint I have so far is the output formats on PC are more limited than on Mac. I find it horrifying that I can only export an MP4 file with 192K AAC audio, and if I want to use MP3 in another container as an alternative, I am also limited to 192K bit rate for audio. I consider 192K audio unacceptable. Maybe I'm missing something, but it appears my only viable audio option for decent audio quality is PCM using Mov format. Also, the support for video drivers on PC is (being polite) extremely spotty. Some (many?) versions of the drivers for my video card crash Resolve and are simply unusable. I had to go through several revisions of drivers to find one that will work, and drivers that work for editing sometimes don't work for rendering. I am assuming Mac users have far fewer video driver issues.

Right now I am floating between the two products, deciding which one to use for future projects, but the issues listed above are pushing me back toward using Vegas. My initial impressions in a nutshell are that Vegas is way easier to use, Resolve much more powerful but too keyboard and Mac centric for my liking - and extremely unfriendly to PC video drivers. Those are initial impressions and may change as I get more familiar with Resolve, and there are a lot of nuances in those observations, of course.

Used exclusively Macs for almost 20 years, until Apple burned us badly with "Mac Pros."

Now entirely on Windows.

It is likely that BM knows their user base. It is likely that developing for Mac is much easier.

I think it should probably be pointed out as well that not everyone using the software will be on the forums. Regardless of whatever responses are received on this thread, there is no way to gauge based on the forum responses what the actual representational percentages of the wider user base happens to be.

I saw this post, and answered it but now every time I look at it I realize there is absolutely no point in the thread. It doesn't matter if every single person who answers it is on a mac, or a windows machine. Nothing in this thread is going to change the pathway Blackmagic has laid out and for that matter, any data collected is nothing but a convienance sample and invalid regarding any usable data.

To the OP, what is the point of this thread?

Win 10 *4

My observation on the platforms that people use (and this will irk some people) is that people who just want things to work tend to use Macs and those who are a bit more prepared to get their hands dirty and are often more technical will use windows. I am always swapping components in and out trying to increase performance for Resolve, Fusion and Blender. I also write my own plugins and customise/automate my workflows heavily. I really don't like Macs and remember when studying was one of a handful of students who after the first semester refused to work on Mac, I was able to crash them repeatedly (wheel of death) so I don't think they like me either. PC's can be hard work and often present problems that require a lot of expertise as they are made from many different components from different manufacturers so are often less stable, but the flip side is they are also more flexible and give you a lot more bang for your buck. Apple are masters of branding and historically have had a huge user base in the media community and I think BMD are associating with them for this reason (though they offer much better value IMO).

Kel nailed it. Apple has a limited number of models and it’s easy to test a manufacturers software on these. The number of possible combinations of PCs is nearly endless and no manufacturer can try all of them. So, if you want a stable system, you need to be more knowledgeable to get your own system running smoothly with demanding software like DR.

Windows x 2.

I see a lot of Blackmagic marketing saying how well Resolve works on M1s, and it makes me wonder if Windows + Nvidia works as well with those features, because it doesn't get mentioned.

Well, Nvidias seem to have more frequent problems with "Memory Full" errors (judging from discussions in this forum).

That's why other pro software uses HP Zx as recommended system.
Resolve also seems to favor Nvidia over AMD. Mac Pros only use AMD, so there is a contradiction in the Mac bias.
It would be great if Linux, Win and Mac would get equal support, but I understand the financial constraints of a 300$ software.

In the last year they've put out two minor releases to support Intel IGPUs. One of the releases supports cards that still aren't shipping.

I wouldn't look at the marketing but look at what is actually being released.
