Resolve 18 Will Not Open (W10)

PostWed Aug 17, 2022 10:27 pm

Hello!

I cannot seem to get Resolve to boot on my system. The opening loader does come on, but after loading everything it simply stops and does not do anything further.

Specs:
12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900KF 3.19 GHz
64GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti

I tried running CaptureLogs and I get this error:
zip error: Could not create output file

Any help is welcome, thanks!

Hoping to have help on this as the thread was not approved on the same day, hence the lack of it showing on the front page. Thanks everyone!

The log error is due to having your Desktop on OneDrive.

Unzip the attached file.

The zip contains this file: CaptureLogsOneDrive.bat

Copy this file to C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

Then run CaptureLogsOneDrive.bat

This should create the log file.

Also, open the Windows System Information app, and select its File - Save menu and create a .NFO file and provide that.

You'll need to put both these files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files. Since you are a new forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If that happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't see it as a URL.

Open Windows Settings - Apps & features and select DaVinci Resolve Control Panels, then click Uninstall.

Now Resolve should launch.

Do you have any Resolve control panels?

I'm not sure - would you be able to provide me with a reference to what I should be seeing? Thanks!

A Control Panel is a physical device you would have purchased.
Win 10 Home | Intel i7 - 10700f 64 GB 1 TB GB SSD 2 TB SSD
RTX-3060 12 GB | Resolve Studio 18.6.5| Fusion Studio 18.6.5

Win 10 Home | Intel Core I7-7700HQ 32 GB 1 TB NVME SSD 1 TB SATA SSD
GTX-1060-6GB | Resolve 17.4.6

That's what I thought - thanks for clearing that up; no, I don't have any nor have any short-term plans of purchasing some.

Is there anything else I should lookout for? Thanks again Dwaine! Very helpful.

Nope. Just an occasional glitch we're looking into. I'm happy you don't have a panel, so it's a simple fix.

Next time you install a Resolve update, it will have the DaVinci Resolve Control Panels selected in the installer. You probably want to uncheck that and not install it again.

Hi! I reached this post because today I started having this same issue on my Mac running OS Monterey. As I don´t have panels, I took out of the folder the DaVinci Control Panel Setup app, and that did it, solved my problem.

What exactly did you remove?

There is no control panels folder on Mac.

Did you remove the "DaVinci Control Panels Setup.app" file from the DaVinci Resolve folder in the Applications folder?

Ah! I had problems with it not opening while I had a speed editor is plugged in. I eventually got it to start working by unplugging it, launching, closing, and then opening it with the panel plugged in.

I have just downloaded Resolve 18 on my Windows 10 laptop, and it will not open.

Tried everything suggested so far, and it still won't load.

Anyone have any further ideas?

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Hi, I'm having a very similar issue, but I'm on windows 11. Davinci Resolve 18.1.12.006 will not open at all. Today when I was trying to export a Timeline for a youtube video on Davinci Resolve 18.1.1 (i believe), it kept crashing it did it twice and then when I tried to open the app it wouldn't even show it's typical splash screen. Since then I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling (to 18.1.12.006), restarting my computer, updating and restarting my computer, removing usb devices, running in compatibility mode, running in admin mode, installing Nvidia studio driver, reinstalling Nvidia game ready driver, and so much more. Nothing has worked, and I need to get this video out as soon as possible. I've been trying to figure it out for hours to no avail.

I tried this and was unable to find the file--I have made sure Windows does not hide files with known extensions. This is especially strange because DaVinci Resolve was working perfectly for me yesterday. Any advice?

Your Google Drive link requires access credentials. Please make it an open link.

We'll need the .NFO file. There is no reason for Windows not to make that.

Open the Windows System Information app. Select the File menu, then select Save. If that's not working for you, describe exactly what the issue is.

You currently have an AMD 22.5.1 driver installed. But the HP Support site has a newer driver 27.20.x driver available:

https://support.hp.com/au-en/drivers/se ... b-288164-1

Give that a try and see if it helps.

Your NFO also shows this under Display: USB Mobile Monitor Virtual Display. Not sure what that is, but sometimes those sorts of things upset Resolve. In Windows Device Manager - Display Adapters, you could try disabling that and see if that helps. Maybe try that before updating the AMD driver, since it's a quick and simple thing to try.

Open Windows Settings - Add or remove programs

Find DaVinci Resolve Control Panels in the list of programs.

Click the 3 dot menu on the right of the app.

Select Uninstall.

Now Resolve should launch.

In addition to the Resolve log file which you have provided, we also need a Windows System Information .NFO file. To generate that, open the Windows System Information app, and select its File menu, then Save.

Hi Dwayne -

I have a somewhat different problem. Since version 17 (or so) when I launch davinci I get the spinning blue wheel and it then goes away. Process popped up in task manager and then went away.

I created another user account on my computer, and when I logged into that, I could open davinci without a problem. I've since run each update all the way to the current version (18.something) hoping perhaps new files would overwrite whatever may have been causing the problem. Same story - original user account cannot open Davinci, new user account can. It's not the end of the world but it's a hassle as my original user account has all my windows and other programs settings.

I do have a speed editor but I tried removing the Davinci Control Panel software. This didn't have any effect.

I've also tried "run as administrator" and "troubleshoot compatibility".

Below is the Windows system info and davinci logs. Thank you!

Hello!! I'm having the same issue w/ version 18.2
I can try to open the program w/ or w/o Admin mode and it will load in task manager for a few seconds before closing w/ no popup or response. Have tried restarting many times.
I have updated drivers, turned off firewall, tried the Windows Compatibility Troubleshooter, tried uninstalling and reinstalling it,

Windows Specs:
12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900K 3.19GHz
32GB Ram
64bit operating system, x64-based processor
Windows 10 Home (OS Build 19045.2486)
Drivers/video card stuff: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 770, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050
Latest Studio Driver as of 1/28/23 (version 528.24)

Link to the windows NFO and the davinci logs
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Any advice would be lovely as I've always enjoyed this program and was hoping to get it to work on my new PC. Thank you!

@Elsbeth: Resolve is instantly crashing at the GPU detect stage. And the Windows error logs show it's crashing trying to access OpenCL.dll. Which it shouldn't be, since you have an NVIDIA GPU.

But you also have an Intel UHD Graphics 770 iGPU, and I guess that's what's likely causing the issue.

Open Windows Device Manager, and under Display Adapters, right click the Intel adapter and select Disable device. Then see what Resolve does.

@Greg: You have multiple files in the Preferences folder that have been corrupted somehow. No idea how this number of files would have been corrupted. Sometimes a Resolve crash can corrupt the config.dat and .config.data files, but that doesn't affect all the other files that are affected in your case.

Open File Explorer Options, and on the View tab, enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

Also unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then in File Explorer, navigate to this folder:

C:\Users\greg\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences

Delete the config.dat, config.dat.bak, .config.data and .config.data.bak files.

Also delete the UI.preset, keyboard-preset.xml, usersmartfolder.xml and config.user.xml files.

Now Resolve should start.

It will recreate the config files with the default starting info. If you had any Preferences modifications made, be sure to reapply those after starting.

If you had any Keyboard Customization things done, those will also be gone.

Finally, the dblist.conf file is missing. That will get recreated when Resolve launches, but if you had any Project Libraries other than the default Local - Local Database project library, those will not be shown. You'll need to Reconnect to any other databases. I can't imagine why that would be gone unless someone was messing with things in the Preferences folder. I see a file called .config_oldtemp.data which would have had to be created manually. It has a date of March 2022. This would confirm my suspicion that something was playing around in this folder at some point.

Edit: The above comments about dblist.conf being missing is a brain fart on my part. We no longer capture the dblist.conf file in our log capture, which is why I don't see it. So it's probably there. My hope is that it's not also corrupt. If in doubt, you can send me that file, and I'll verify if it's OK or not.

Finally finally, if you wanted a pretty much clean start to the Preferences folder, you can rename the existing folder to Preferences.orig, and when Resolve launches, it will run the onboarding app, and ask you to run Quick Setup. As if you were doing a new Resolve install. Again, any existing project libraries would not be seen, just the default Local - Local Database project library. If you had other libraries, you'd need to Reconnect to them to see them in the Project Manager list.

Thanks Dwaine Maggart for your time.

Indeed, the "montaaage 2" project was the only one I could no longer open, starting a new project opened the DR interface for me. I used this to successfully reopen my project by going through File->Project Manager--> project open. After a short wait, the project opened, but with a lot of freezes and lag, and DR crashing at the slightest prolonged timeline playback, sometimes just by moving the playback cursor on the timeline.

I bet that using Magic Mask in Fusion could be the problem source.. And indeed, after deleting all Fusion rushes with a Magic Mask.. No more problems, the project launches in 10-20 sec and no slowing down during use. So this time I used the Magic mask via the color tab and the project launches without any problem and very quickly and the interface is fluid.

Only I find myself having recurrent crashes on a rush that uses the MagicMask, I feel that waiting longer and/or going to the color tab on the rush in question avoids crashing later.

To send you the buggy Project... I suspected that I should have kept the project and worked on a copy in case you asked for it.. Maybe find it with the BackUp Project?

Anyway, I did my best and I copied my project to try the Magic Masks with Fusion like i did before. Of course, there are no more launch problems (thanks demo effect  ), only a crash as soon as I read one of the rushes with a Magic Mask (the same where it doesn't always do it with MagicMask via color).

So I provide the link with my latest logs... The project that crashed but crashes almost no more with the MagicMask color and the copied project with MagicMask Fusion. Plus, I put the NFO of the system back.

Looking forward to being more precise if needed.

Dwaine you are amazing. Thank you for taking the time to help. You were spot on and Davinci is working properly now!

As for ".config_oldtemp.data", my guess is I created that as I was installing the network postgres database awhile back.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it! Five star review :)

It's a problem with the Intel UHD 620 graphics driver.

You already have a newer driver than the newest Lenovo driver for your Yoga 920-13IKB laptop.

Try the current Intel integrated graphics driver for your CPU:

Logs aren't clear as to an issue, but the NFO shows you have a display connected to the onboard motherboard Intel UHD 630 iGPU graphics port and nothing connected to the RTX2060 Super NVIDIA card.

Resolve requires the display to be connected to the main processing GPU. So move the display over to the NVIDIA card, and see if that makes things work.

Hello!

I have installed DR 18 and it crashed each time it opened, and asked me to backup the project library. So then, I brought it to a informatician who deleted windows 10, and put windows 11. I had to reinstall DR.

The thing is, now, each time I click on the app, I see for a split second the loading screen before seeing the crash window. It's really quick. I would like some help please...

In File Explorer, go to this folder:

C:\Users\Julien\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

Rename the Preferences folder to Preferences.orig

See if Resolve will start. If it does, you'll need to reset any changes you made in the Resolve Preferences area.

The folder above is a "hidden" folder. To see hidden folders on your system, open File Explorer Options, and on the View tab, enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

Also unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".

Hey Dwaine,

Thank you for your quick response!

I managed to open Resolve, the only thing is, now, the app is really slow...

Exemple, even when I click on edit tab, it takes 5 seconds to change. When i'm editing, I play the video, press pause an then put my cursor back to the start, it freezes for 15 seconds each time...

I don't understand, because this never happened to me, and I just installed a 4070ti... Shouldn't it be faster in fact?

Other weird thing is, even though Resolve it freezing, my task manager says my CPU is working about only 15%. It's like Resolve isn't taking all the capacity of my computer or something...

@Dwaine Maggart

Do you have any ideas please?

Thank you for your time!

Hey team,

I curated a report on why Davinci won't open with possible causes and its solutions but it seems people still fail to open it.

Do you people have any idea? I have covered almost everything, have a look <a href="https://cutcopyedit.com/davinci-resolve-not-opening/">Here</a></p>
