Can't save longer file names in certain folders

PostMon Aug 22, 2022 11:34 am

So I'm a few folders deep in my database with one of my clients, but for some reason in this folder I can't save longer file names? It just says 'Critical Error Saving Project'

I can save it in the parent folder just fine, but not in the new one...
Is this some weird thing like... too many folders deep the file path can't be long or something?
It's annoying because now I need more parent level folders and I'm trying to keep things a bit more organised than this

Anyone else have this issue? I was about 5 folders deep and only tried to use this name:

'Episode 2 - Summer Shredding & OCB 1'

So it's not exactly that long and like I say it works in the parent folder

Sounds like you could've maybe reached an internal or OS driven text length limit on File Path (Clip Directory + File Name). I'm not aware of a limit in Resolve but Windows 10 used to have a 256 character path limit. Look in the Metadata window, first two items are the File Name and Clip Directory. Does it look excessive? What is the overall length? What system are you on?

EDIT: Second read I'm thinking you're talking about Project Library Directories (vs Clip Directories). Same basic question tho. What is the total length for database location path + project directory (folder) path + project name?

For example, if the full path to a particular project on my Mac was:
/volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/andymees/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Resolve Disk Database/Resolve Projects/Users/guest/Projects/2022/Extreme Sports/Redbull/Current Projects/Cliff Diving World Series/Episode 2 - It's all going Pear Shaped.

... that would be around 270 characters and (if that's the problem) would break a 256 character file path limit if used in full as such (but would fall under the limit if saving in the parent directory).

Again, am just speculating here, but it may be worth checking/testing. If it seems to add up, consider your options, like saving your database at a less nested level and/or changing your client project naming/folder structure... or just removing the path length limitation (if its an OS level thing that you can control).

Aah yes that makes sense, I'll have a gander at removing it on the OS Level! Thanks for your input :)
