[Solved] Import a-format ambisonic onto one audio track?

PostWed Aug 24, 2022 11:02 am

Hi All,

Hopefully a quick answer! I have some first-order a-format 4-channel polywav recordings which I'd like to decode on the Fairlight page in Resolve. But I can't seem to work out how to bring the audio into the timeline without it automatically splitting it into 4 mono tracks rather than staying as a multichannel wav (so my VST can process that multichannel wav into a stereo format).

Up till now I've been bringing them into Reaper, where they stay as multichannel wavs on one track, which allows me to use a multichannel VST to decode them. I'd love to be able to do this directly in Resolve, so I can manipulate the audio to match the image, without having to round-trip between Resolve and Reaper.

Pick one of the automatically created tracks, change track-type to whatever format you need, right click on your clip, choose audio attributes and assign the channels as you like.
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.

Hi! Thanks for that but I still don't quite get what I'm hoping for. I'm simply looking to put a 4-channel wav on one track so I can use a 4-channel VST with it. Will keep experimenting though...

Hm... what you describe is exactly what I get, when I recorded ambisonic sound with my zoom recorder and what I described is how I deal with it. In my case every mono track contains all four channels, so I delete all but one, adjust the track-type and assign the channels. Then I can process it with my VST.

Thanks - yes - I did what you suggested and set the both the audio clip and the audio track it's on to "Adaptive 4" and that worked.

Much nicer to be able to do all this in Resolve although I will probably stick with Reaper if anything involves Automation, as my control surface doesn't play nicely with Resolve.

Cheers

What console do you use?

Using Behringer x-touch compact for audio - but I have the Resolve Speed Editor for video and that works well.

Ok, I have no experience with this one. I am using an X-Touch One and automation is one of the things that work fine out of the box in Fairlight.

Will give that another chance too! I vaguely recall the x-touch compact only worked on one channel but I will try again with it. Thanks again for helping me solve that polywav issue!

Really appreciate this you guys, made life so much easier! I converted my ambisonic bird sound in Fairlight --> Right click on Audio clip in Media Pool -- > 'Clip Attributes' --> Audio to LRCS, then simply made the track also 4-channel LRCS and all 4 tracks fit now into one track, manipulatable by a single fader yet all 4 tracks within this still operating.
