What these devices have is called an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and these are capable of measuring both angular and linear acceleration.
'Gyroscope' is a popular expression for them, but not really correct, since that would be based on a rotating device like an artificial horizon in planes or directional devices on ships, which have been in use for more than a century.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
