How to export in AV1?

PostFri Sep 23, 2022 7:50 pm

Ok. I can't hardly find anything about how to export/render a video in Resolve using .AV1. Yet I have found a website and a intel-BMD press release that both advertise this as being possible... so...what's the secret? Where can I select AV1 as an export option in Resolve 18.0.2?

Were they talking about the new Intel GPU?

Given that this is (correct me if I'm wrong) an open standard then perhaps we could have a CPU-based "native mode" encoder for AV1 that would allow deliveries in this format regardless of the GPU being used?

It would be far slower than a GPU-based encoder but in situations where AV1 is needed it would be an option.

Press release from Intel:
https://www.intel.cn/content/dam/www/ce ... -brief.pdf

Intel aside, I know the RTX 4000 series supports AV1 encoding/decoding. And since the above mentions BMD and resolve 18 specifically with relation to AV1, there should be an option to export in AV1, but I'm not seeing one anywhere. Does Resolve 18 not support AV1 encoding yet???

Regarding that press release, first of all you need that Intel hardware. Like an Intel Arc GPU or a supported CPU.

Nope, only AV1 decode, at least according to NVIDIA themselves:

Are you looking in the wrong place? It does have AV1 encode and the list confirms it.

From NVIDIA:

"The new GeForce RTX 4090 brings a massive boost in performance, third-generation Ray Tracing Cores, fourth-generation Tensor Cores, dual eighth-generation NVIDIA AV1 Encoders"

According to INTEL Davinci Resolve Supports AV1:

"This makes DaVinci Resolve highly appealing to creators who want to boost the video quality of their works without incurring a steep bandwidth penalty. Video encoded with AV1 can be directly uploaded to YouTube and other platforms."

Many video formats can.

Most (all?) are still re-encoded anyway.

Do we know if that holds here?

You can upload directly, that's true. Video is still re-encoded no matter what you do.

Yes, those different quality options are generated from what you give them. I don't think there's a reason to upload a heavily compressed file to YouTube for them to transcode again unless you're bandwidth constrained for some reason, so I just upload DNx/ProRes files to streaming platforms and wait for them to handle it.

I was very confused on this as well, got a brand new 4090 yesterday and multiple reviews showing Davinci Resolve AV1 export rendertimes over last few days.. But its not publicly available.

From this article: https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/g ... iew,5.html
"DaVinci Resolve by Blackmagic Design, the Voukoder plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro, and Jianying, the leading video editing tool in China, all enable AV1 compatibility and a dual encoder via encode presets. In October, dual encoder and AV1 compatibility will be available for these applications."

Any news, just got a 4090, cannot even export with both encoders, or find AV1 under export. Du I need to install something?

Except that in this part of the world, despite having gigabit fibre, YouTube only uploads at 50Mb/S so it would take many hours to upload videos in a relatively lightweight codec. I use H256 and even then many of my YouTUbe videos are 5-6GB in size.

I'm guessing that those of you in the USA get somewhat better upload speeds than that.

BMD has to release a new version of Resolve first. Even if the system as such can use the nVidia drivers there's no UI for it in Resolve. The current Resolve version was released only days after the nVidia announcement so it's not surprising it doesn't currently work.

That or a 3rd party could make an encoder plugin specifically for Resolve.

I don't really see an immediate need for AV1.
Encoding and decoding complexity is crazy and unproportional compared to gains.
H265 is still massive issue for encoding and gains are also questionable.
Atm. h264 is a sweet spot. We can encode it at realistic speeds and quality is "good enough".

On top of this Resolve implementation will be very simple and limited like with all current GPU assisted codecs.
I rather had BM to focus on other things.

I still don't understand why Youtube doesn't allow AV1 codec with their own specs to upload.

I mean... to avoid recompression on their side.

Because you would upload 1 file at high bitrate and resolution and they need many resolution files for smooth streaming at bitrates which they control. Smooth streaming also requires files done in specific way which is far from typical users knowledge.
Problem is not with recompression itself, but with YT quality.
They do min. acceptable quality, so they can actually make money. If they let clients control bitrate they would gone out of business quickly. Streaming is quite expensive business.

I know this but why not giving a specific encoding profile which would match to the master file? Not only the bitrate but many others details (like in broadcast world with TV channels).

I mean, then : one "untouched" file for highest quality, and then recompressed versions made by Youtube themselves for lowest / resolution quality options.

I don't know, maybe I'm dreaming in something impossible :).

By they way, how does Youtube choose if your file will be encoded in VP9 or AV1?

It's all about $. YT is not a charity and it's there to make money. Streaming every bit = cost, so they stream as low as possible and put as many as possible adverts, so whole service is profitable.

Just tried a 8K DCI @ 50 fps HDR10 n Main10 profile with a RTX 4090: encoding at 23-26 fps

But only 33% of GPU usage!

While the Nvidia AV1 encoder works great in Resolve 18.1, it's stuck using only the MP4 container which means the only audio option is 192Kbit/s AAC. The AAC encoder in Resolve on Windows is very artifacty, making this a non-starter for me unfortunately.

Performance is good though. I'm encoding a 4.6K CDNG RAW sequence to 4K UHD 10-bit AV1 at around 100fps using the Medium speed preset and Tuning set to High Quality. This is on a seven year old workstation with an RTX 4090.

Return to DaVinci Resolve
