DR v 18.0.3 Cannot Play MP4's

How on earth did this happen???
Clips play fine with VLC; I can see the video and hear the audio.
However in DR, I only see the audio waveform and no video plays.
Could this be somehow related to my update from Win10 to Win11?

Your sig says you have Resolve Studio. Can you confirm that if you select About DaVinci Resolve, that the Studio version is installed, and that the free version wasn't accidentally installed?

First, I’m shooting using a Canon R6 at a fixed 24fps
I contacted both Microsoft and Canon and neither had an answer nor solution for this problem.
I am certain that I am using Studio as I can use noise reduction tools not available in free version, the About page says it is Studio, and a voice call to Blackmagic confirmed that I am using Studio.

There is a Win installed movie maker called Cine… something and it also is able to play the video files with video content. So, the only 2 apps that play the video content are VLC and that MS app.

In a call with Canon, they basically said their job ends when the file gets to the PC and that they do not support Win issues.

I have shot multiple test files and all the results are the same: DR and all other apps are not able to play video content. DR sees all those files as audio files only. I have to convert all of those native Canon MP4 files to an MP4 (or any other type) in order for DR and all apps to play video content.

Additionally, if things couldn’t be worse, applying a Canon log 3 color transform in DR is not at all correct in many obvious ways. I’ve tested this many times as well. I’ve captured in C-log 3 multiple times, ran the 3rd party conversion to MP4, and selected the color trans options accordingly, and the results are very saturated and very dark photos. This is a nightmare.

Feel free to watch this video if you want to see what methods I used regarding the color space transform. It works great for Darren but not for me.

Hopefully somebody will be able to resolve both of these major issues.

As Peter requested, we need a link to a sample file that is not showing video in Resolve for you.

We'd also like to see a Resolve diagnostic log from your system. You can generate that from the Resolve Help menu.

You might need to download the HEVC codec from the Microsoft store if you upgraded to Win 11.

Only the non-log file plays directly on my PC running Win 11.

No, it's not a Windows 11 issue. Works fine on Windows 11.


Send a Resolve log. And while you're at it, might as well send a .NFO file as well, as I'll probably want to see that. Open the Windows System Information app and select it's File menu, then Save to create the .NFO file.

You have the free version of Resolve installed.

We released Resolve 18.0.4 last night.

You can download and install Resolve Studio 18.0.4 over top of the free 18.0.3 without needing to uninstall anything.

I do and I have installed Studio v. 18.0.4.
I do not see any differences. Were you thinking that my issues would be addresses?

Yes. Resolve Studio should play the file you provided. The free Resolve you had installed would not.

And while we're talking about system specifics, your sig shows you have an RTX3080TI GPU and an i9 CPU.

But the NFO you sent shows a GTX1650Ti GPU and an i7 CPU.

What are the specs in your sig from?

Dwaine has said several times that this would happen if you have the free version of Resolve installed. Re-install Resolve Studio and check it again.

If the file you provided came from your camera, there is nothing wrong with your camera.

So far you haven't provided us with accurate data. You said you had Studio installed, and you didn't.

Your sig says you have hardware which your Resolve log and Windows NFO shows you don't have.

If you'd please provide an updated log after installing Resolve Studio 18.0.4, it may show some issue as to why the file isn't working.

First of all, thank you for your patience. I installed Studio v 18.0.4 and that fixed both of my problems. So, that’s great.

Secondly, I did have Studio installed on that machine about a month ago. I apologize that I don’t know why it is not on THAT machine. My bad. However, why would anyone think that an MP4 log file would NOT play on the free version. Additionally, why on earth would anyone think the color transform wouldn’t work. And, you mad at me for providing poor data? Seriously?

I just spent 4 hrs dealing with this crap with a high fever and a deadline next week. Believe me, I certainly didn’t mean to provide you with poor information. On the contrary, I reacted as quickly as possible and provided you with everything you asked for. Just to be more clear AND REPEAT WHAT I SAID in the very beginning, I have several PCs and both were reacting the same way. The signature did not allow me to include information on both PCs.

At the moment, I’m semi-thrilled that you provided me with 18.0.4 and that I can complete my work.

MP4 says nothing, it's just a container, a box.
The codec inside if it is the important point. And then, could it be that you had accidentally installed the free version on the machine that didn't work? It has happened to others before.
