Thanks for the answer Jim.
I'm assuming then that it's only in regeneration that Resolve makes the necessary links; that if I'd simply copied the file from one disk to another that, unlike other media, there is no way to make Resolve recognize it.
I also realize now that I'll have to keep that old disk active as well as it has the render files of many other projects. My real reason for wanting to change disks now is so that I can put the render files for a project I'm working on on an SSD. This project is rather render intensive and I've been getting some stuttering on playback. Hoping a faster access to the render files might help.
But thanks again Jim for your help. Like many of us, I really rely on this chat room and the help of folks like you to see me through the intricacies of Resolve.
