How to convert?

PostThu Sep 29, 2022 7:22 am

4K clips shot with a smartphone using Filmic Pro still have a slight variation in fps in audio and video. It is also in H.265. This is pretty heavy on my pc. I think it will be better when I first do a conversion to a constant fps and someting like DNXHD or ProRes. The extra diskstorage is not a big deal since SSD storage is reasonable cheap.

How do I do this in one go? (wihout loss of quality) What (free) software is suitable? (I have Handbrake and probably Shutter Encoder)

I use Shutter Encoder when converting H.26x to DNXHD or DNXHR.

I don't shoot 4k so can't advise on what bit rates you should be using to not lose quality.

Handbrake and ShutterEncoder seem to be front-end basically for an ffmpeg type app.

They just 'wrap' it with a different UI. ShutterEncoder has a newer look and UI, and even as an old guy with many years at this I stumble a bit trying to remember what Handbrake options actually do. That's not always intuitive.

But from the use I've had and testing I've seen, the three apps do the same thing, pretty much exactly, with the same options chosen.

So I've gone to using S-E simply because it's easier.

All three though manage the conversion from VFR to CFR correctly.

With DNxHR or ProRes you don’t choose bitrates, you choose quality levels. HQ should be plenty for phone footage. I second Shutter Encoder for noobs.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Wouldn't you just do the conversion to DnxHR in Resolve??... or am I missing something?

Sure - if it reads the specific codec.

thanks all,

New phone footage came in today, so I can try Shutter Encoder.

BTW This is 10bit footage, so I think I better use HQX.
