Step back one speed in J K L Playback

PostMon Oct 03, 2022 9:45 pm

Hi all,
Relatively new resolve user here (and first post!)
Thanks for all the great info I've been finding on this forum.

Is there a way to step back one speed while use JKL for playback?

For instance, if I tap L twice, playback is 2x, but there's no way to step directly back from 2x to 1x playback.
Right now the only way I can do that is by hitting K and then L once.

Any solutions for this?

Thanks!

We can only increase the speed. You'll have to Stop and star over to go from 8x to 2x, for example.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I agree with the OP and wish there were the option to, say, hit lllj and be at ll speed rather than going in reverse as per the final j.

I also agree with the OP... being able to step up and down through the playback shuttle speeds (via standard JKL transport controls) is, by far, the most flexible (and useful) behaviour. I assume it's as yet unimplemented because the devs have been cracking on bringing other pages up to speed ... I'm hopeful they'll eventually circle back to the Edit Page and strengthen the foundations a bit.

Same for me. If I hit J, I want to go back, not slow down the forward.

I'm on team slow down. I'll regularly scrub through super fast and know I'm getting close and want to slow down. It's weird to have to stop and then try to speed back up at whatever 1 slower speed was. Was it 4 presses? 3? This would be a great toggle option IMO.

If you are on team ‘slow down’ then what you really need is a jog/shuttle control (perhaps emulated with mouse and/or keyboard controls, but a real shuttle control would be ideal). I’m on team ‘as-is’ but I wouldn’t mind an option key used with the L or J to drop the speed down again.

Thx Steve, yep, already have the Speed Editor for that... would obviously still rather have it via standard JKL control tho (hence the post.) Lol. I live in hope.

A slowdown mechanic would be much more useful. Say you are at 4 taps forward but want to go back to 3. It's one click. If you want to go reverse it's 2 clicks.
But as it works now it's one click instant reverse. But 4x clicks to get from 4x forward to 3x forward.

While it may be a preference, slowdown is a better mechanic on paper. You pay just 1 extra click to go to the opposite direction, for always less clicks for other situations. Especially if you don't know how fast you want to speed through it yet, you often click one time too many and now you have to stop first. Super annoying.

But perhaps an option in the user preferences could be the ultimate solution to satisfy both.

This is one of those times where I would argue "you can't have an option for everything. This is how it works. Deal with it."

Explore using JKL together with the Shift key. E.g. slow down to reach the Shift+K combination.
There are more possibilities. It can also be slowed down to 0.5 or 0.25 fps.

Holy smokes, Vit!!! That is awesome! For some reason I had totally missed that and it make a world of difference to using the JKL for refined review. Thanks for posting this!

Thanks Vit! Hidden in plain sight. Shift K steps back exactly as requested.
Honestly, I'd still rather the mechanics didn't require the shift modifier, but if wishes were fishes I'd have an aquarium. I can get used to this.
