DaVinci Resolve for iPad Announced!

Wow. Video up on Apple's website. No release date yet.
Well, this is the actual "Pro" app that people have been clamoring for, to justify the pro moniker. Some thoughts...
- No one on the Apple rumor front saw this one coming
- Interesting that Resolve beat FCPX to the iOS punch.
- I'm probably most excited about the possibility of using the iPad as a true input device for the desktop app... Still using the desktop for editing, etc., but using iPad input for matte work, color, etc. But they have not yet announced if this is possible.
As someone who is testing Resolve as an alternative to Premiere for a very large company, this is massive news.

Yeah, I saw it too! What I understand from the screenshot on Apple's website is that it's just the Cut and Color pages for now. But if those sync up with Blackmagic Cloud (which I totally expect) then that's already super nice.

I would fall down laughing if you could edit ProRes Raw only on the iPad version.

Yeah would love some details - only for the new M2 iPad Pros, or able to run on M1 (or even Bionic)? Will BM Cloud be needed, or can we sync some other way? etc.

I can see all the questions coming. Let Blackmagic announce their software so we can get some answers. My guess is that it will be in a few hours, or tomorrow at NAB New York.

Hard to imagine the iPad Pro having enough memory to support the hungry demands of Resolve. Maybe this means that BMD will architect a more forgiving memory management scheme.

They will have 8 or 16 Gb of RAM - in my humble opinion this would be more than enough for rough cuts "on the fly" you can show on stage, based on my experience with 8Gb M1 MacBook Pro. I doubt anyone would consider the iPads as a replacement for a proper workstation.

Wow, with all the Windows issues Blackmagic must have given up. There's basic issues like fonts not displaying and no scaling possible for over 10 years haha!

You may be right but I anticipate the flock of complaints that the iPad doesn't do what people expect (which is to edit and grade start to finish relatively simple timelines). Without a Fusion and Fairlight tab and presumably limited color features, perhaps it is also scaled to provide a workable and useful experience whether you are doing rough-cuts for later finishing on a powerful desktop or you are intending to author an entire project on your iPad.

THIS. To be clear the iPad version IS NOT going to replace your full studio version of Resolve. It's just to do quick and easy things. Kind of like an iMovie version of Resolve.

I'm not sure that matters. There will be users, presumably, that don't even have a desktop system - they just want to edit family videos on their iPad (just like you can do with iMovie and LumaFusion).
On the other hand, it may turn out that Resolve on the iPad is specifically designed to work in tandem with a Resolve workstation (in which case, you are absolutely correct). I guess we'll see how BMD positions it (hopefully soon).

There are some great screen shots of the new app here:
https://ymcinema.com/2022/10/18/apple-i ... -for-ipad/Some of the things I took away from them are:
1) There is a sync button in the upper left of the app. I am thinking this is so you can sync you iPad project to your computer?
2) There is an export button on the upper right side. I wonder how the export option differs from the rendering option?
3) The color grading screen looks very interesting. You cannot see the entire screen so lots of guesswork here. However it looks pretty full-featured. One thought I had was, while the iPad is not a true reference monitor, no matter how much Apple says it is, I wonder if a "native" image will look better than when you use the iPad as an external monitor.
It will be interesting.

Wouldn't it more likely just be the Sync Bin? It's the same icon. Looks like they shortened "Media Pool" to "Media" and "Sync Bin" to "Sync".

I think this is welcome. If their engineers can figure how to architect Resolve to be lean and mean on an IPad Pro M2, and if that same code base and architecture can transfer over to the bigger Mac series, that Resolve will be super efficient and capable of handling demanding workload on the Max and Ultra… and maybe better than a PC with a 4090. TDB.

You are probably right. I was thinking this was how you get back and forth to Blackmagic Cloud. Which, by the way, just became more powerful.

The basic architecture could support cutting on an iPad. The actual Resolve databases are small, containing only the editing decisions. The actual footage is not inside, and these instructions can be targeted to the appropriate storage source either in the cloud or on a hd. This would allow remote renders from the combination of the editing instructions on the iPad, and the stored actual footage.
The place where it gets tricky is storing the actual footage on the iPad. Only very short amounts of raw footage can be stored on the iPad. Low res proxies could solve part of the problem, but for high quality output, the high res original must be available someplace.

One of the benefits of the Pro models is the USB-C connector allowing the connection of external storage devices such as hard drives and SSDs.
LumaFusion is already capable of referencing media on an external drive while running on an iPad Pro, so Resolve should in theory be able to do the same when you need to work with more media than you can reasonably fit onto the iPad itself.

I'd expect it to do what a MB Air is doing right now for pros with some need to be mobile: do some rough editing and try out some basic grades and show those around. The screen of the iPad is pretty decent if you switch off the gimmicks. Of course, pros will still need a proper workstation for finishing.
But I can imagine amateurs doing all the work on an iPad. They can with LumaFusion right now, and it wouldn't make any sense for MB to be below that level.
Interesting times, and I'm really curious if ProRes RAW is going to come!

As I wrote here, my tests were done on a MacBook Air M2 which was surprisingly capable of low resolution projects.

Jump to about 4:54 in and also 8:06 to see some brief shots of Resolve for iPad Pro:
They specifically say "for color correction, editing, and visual effects," so you wonder how stripped-down this is from the regular version of Resolve Studio.
I'm very skeptical about this, because they're kind of implying that you can "do it all" on iPad Pro. The issues of monitoring, calibration, storage space, and external control are still major challenges. It's rough to do everything on a very hefty "desktop replacement" laptop as it is, even with an external color-managed display.
On the plus side, I don't see a problem with creating quick dailies or something with iPad Pro and then uploading them to the cloud. And yet (as I've said many times), you could probably also design an app for iPad to let you drive your car... but is that really practical? At what point is a tablet just a gimmick and not nearly as well-suited for a project as a beefy laptop or desktop computer?

I think you're misunderstanding the target market for this: it's not professional colorists or even professional editors. It's more likely youtube content creators who like to use Resolve; many of them probably don't even use reference monitors and are looking for ultraportable fast solutions.

As a side, notice that you need to bump the iPad Pro to 1TB storage to get 16 GB RAM, otherwise you get 8 GB - My guess from other's experience with the M1 Air is that 16 GB RAM would be beneficial to running Resolve on the iPad.

I'm sure you are right, Uli, but considering the iPad Pro is not upgradeable, I would be concerned with the next version of Resolve for the iPad where the Fusion page is available - having more RAM in that case would likely be more than beneficial. I'm looking forward to BMD's announcement of this product. Sort of surprising that it hasn't been announced yet given Apple has already let the cat out of the bag.

Agreed, but that's how Resolve supports the variety of titles at the moment. Simple Fusion stuff should work even if it's slow.

I predict Braw will never be possible. So forget dailies if you use a braw workflow.
You will first need to copy all braw media to a desktop/laptop, create proxies and export to the Ipad (pro ...). But, if you have the laptop on site already, why bother ?
I bought a Ipad pro when it came out, it was never able to do prores. The current generation can, but I ended up NEVER using Lumafusion (which I bought in vain), because only the current generation can decode prores natively.
Logic dictates this new generation will not play braw files.
Hence, Resolve for Ipad (pro...) will never be interesting.
Notice how I refuse to call the Ipad (pro...) how it should (not?) be called. I have never done a pro thing with mine since the day I got it !
Games and casual browsing yes. Even the email client is still not "pro".
At the very least, now you can attach external storage.
If it does braw, I will print and eat this post.
If it also does media management, and enables us to copy/backup media by connecting 2 drives at the same time, I will make a salad of my print and eat it raw.
Of course I hope for the best, but the leaked screen shots only show .mp4 media.
At least, it wil get the Affinity Publisher app - so I may get one after all

Why do you think BRAW is impossible? BMD has already ported it to Apple Silicon for the same M1/M2 in MacBooks. I don't see any technical reason for it not to be usable.

I hope you are right, and you do have a point.
But my experience is prores was only possible once the chips supported it.
I was planning on not buying an ipad anymore, but if braw works and affinity publisher is indeed ported, then I will buy it the moment this is confirmed.
Apparantly on the newer generation ipad pro you can already connect 2 ssd at the same time, and copy between them. That is good to know.

ProRes was available on the iPad Pro before they had hardware acceleration and even before the M1. My 2018 iPad Pro (not an M1 model) can play ProRes. Since Apple controls ProRes it only became available once Apple added support for it in iPadOS.
BRAW is accelerated on the GPU using the Metal SDK but can run with CPU only as well. Not sure if Apple would block something like BRAW from the App Store, I don't think so but who knows.

I'm not misunderstanding anything: I think it's a lot of hype and hoopla. Tell me how a fully-equipped $3000 iPad Pro M2 with a keyboard (shown in the Apple demo) is better than an equivalent $3000 MacBook Pro M2 laptop, especially for an application like this.
This is not singling out Resolve at all. I'd say the same thing about FCPX or Premiere or Avid or Final Cut Pro X or Pro Tools. It's going to be very tough to run a program like that entirely on iPad, particularly when you take into consideration media storage, rendering, the need for heat dissipation, and accurate monitoring. I see only chaos and pain for people who believe they can finish an entire show on an iPad. I'd say the same thing about a laptop. Of course, for Cat Videos for YouTube, anything can be fine -- you can already do it on your iPhone. But at what point is it slow, clunky, and way too much trouble?
Uli Plank wrote:So there's hope for a mutual agreement? ProRes RAW in DR maybe?
I would love to see a quid pro quo and see Apple authorize ProRes renders in Windows and Linux Resolve Studio without any limitations.

From the Facebook page just now.
"Today we announced DaVinci Resolve coming to iPad, which will initially feature the cut and color pages from DaVinci Resolve.
The new DaVinci Resolve for iPad will open and create standard DaVinci Resolve project files which are compatible with the desktop version of DaVinci Resolve 18. You will be able to host projects using Blackmagic Cloud and collaborate with multiple users all over the world. Supported file formats include H.264, H.265, Apple ProRes and Blackmagic RAW, with clips able to be imported from the iPad Pro internal storage and Photos library, externally connected iCloud or USB-C media disks.
DaVinci Resolve for iPad is similar to the desktop version of DaVinci Resolve.
There are some adaptions to the UI based on screen size, such as not having a menu bar, however the full color and cut pages are provided. DaVinci Resolve projects can be opened, including support for shared collaborative projects via Blackmagic Cloud.
This means DaVinci Resolve for iPad is the same professional tool, and the same codebase as used on major Hollywood feature films.
DaVinci Resolve for iPad does not include the Fairlight audio page or the Fusion visual effects page because their software code has not yet been redesigned for the iPad. We will continue to work on these pages and will include them in the future.
The edit page is not included as it was originally designed for large screens, with a keyboard and mouse. This makes it very difficult to move to the iPad without changing it in a way that would cause problems for professional editors who rely on the edit page for their work. We expect the edit page to remain a desktop only page.
However this means the cut page needs more features so it can operate on the iPad when the edit page is not available. Until now we focused on adding new types of features to the cut page, because the edit page was always available. However on the iPad, that's not the case. So we will be working hard to add more editing features to the cut page as soon as possible. These features will include enhanced audio support, key framing, split edits and more. We will release these updates as we add the features.
DaVinci Resolve for iPad will be available free of charge in Q4 2022 from the Apple iOS App Store. High end customers who need the features of DaVinci Resolve Studio on the iPad will be able to upgrade via a one off in-app purchase. We expect this update to cost US$95."
Steve.

Why does Blackmagic hate the edit page so much?
It's not just the lack of it on the iPad, it's the neglect it has suffered for the last two years as more and more development goes to the cut page. Disappointing.

It's not for now but the times are changing as they always do. The iPads and MacBooks (iPadOS and macOS) are on a long term convergence path and the advent of the new keyboards with trackpads draws this closer. The iPad Pro is getting closer to a laptop replacement than ever before. With iOS apps that run on macOS and Mac apps getting ported to iPadOS, we are looking at the future of portable computing coming rapidly over the horizon. With the iPads you can now use touch screen or a cursor. Furthermore, the ability to output from an iPad to a large monitor brings it all to a whole new level. An advantage of an iPad with keyboard over a laptop is that you can just leave the keyboard at home when necessary which has serious weight benefits.
The iPad Pros are incredibly powerful machines. I won’t be trading in my M1 Max MacBook Pro anytime soon or perhaps never but the time is coming in the next few years, when purchasing a new portable Apple computer, it will be a matter of deciding between a high end iPad or a MacBook.
