MXF (XAVC-L Sony) files Media Offline at Start

PostMon Nov 07, 2022 9:43 pm

I just imported some footage from my Sony X70 camera that shoots HD 4:2:2 10-bit XAVC-L in an MXF wrapper and Resolve Studio 18.0.4 exhibits off behaviour where there is a first frame then about 1 second or more of 'media offline' and then the rest of the clip is fine. It's like it has an issue decoding the beginning of each clip. I've imported other clips from this camera with past versions of Resolve without any issues.

Note that there are 4 channels of audio on these clips (although only the first two are used) and the audio is 48kHz Linear PCM.

There are a couple of differences now, first the version of Resolve and second, I'm on a MacBook M1 Max for this test (with Ventura 13.0) so the issue could be more than just Resolve Studio 18.0.4.

I wasn't going to post this but then someone else noticed the same behaviour with mxf files generated by the external proxy generator here:

https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=170271

Update: Just tested this same media on my Windows machine (see signature) running Windows 11, Resolve Studio 18.0.4) and did not see this issue. Also, in preview on my MacBook, the hiccup does not occur. Something is going on with this footage in Resolve Studio on the MacBook. Looks like a bug to me.

Updated some info based on further testing - bump.

Here's a link to a 150MB sample that shows the issue in the first couple of seconds:

We may have the first Ventura problem here, since your file plays fine for me.
BTW, the test from the user with the .MXF problem in the Proxy Generator also works without a hitch on my machine.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

On my M1 Macbook Pro running Ventura I'm seeing the same issue with missing frames in Resolve 18.0.4.

It does play without issue in Finder/QuickTime Player.

After Ventura was installed there was also an update deployed for the Pro Video Formats package (although there's no mention of it on Apple's Pro Video Formats page).

File plays fine on my PC but has frames " off line" between frame 3 and frame 14 on my Studio Max running Ventura and Resolve 18.0.4 build 5. All the files from my cameras are h264 or h265 and I have seen no problems so far with Ventura.

Thanks for the check. I haven't used my Sony X70 for a few years but I dug it out because I specifically wanted to compare its 10-bit 422 quality against my Canon R6 at HD resolutions and this is when I discovered the issue in Resolve on my MacBook. The same files play fine on my Windows 11 machine.

Really does seem like a Venture/Resolve compatibility issue. Let the finger pointing begin... lol.

I think it's great that folks are willing to investigate and test these issues. It's the only way we can move the ball forward. Cheers.

Just to add, 4 channels of audio are not the issue as the GH6 has 4 channels of audio too. Normal use only uses the first 2 unless the XLR unit is attached then there is the option of using all 4. Does not seem to matter as all seem to work fine for me. Record format is h265 10bit

I have used Sony footage with 8 tracks of audio. No problem whatsoever.

I'd like to update this by stating that this problem with XAVC-L clips under Resolve 18.x and Ventura 13.0.1 was resolved with the release of Ventura 13.1.
