Magic Mask in Fusion very slow - anyone?

PostFri Nov 11, 2022 9:14 pm

I'm giving Magic Mask a try in Fusion on my MacBook M1 Max. Not entirely surprising that it's very slow compared to its speed on the color page in 18.0.4. I'm in the middle of running some comparisons but it seems quite bad. Looking for anyone else to confirm.

Update: I estimate about 10x slower on the Fusion page. I'll do another test as this seems unexpected.

YEs, just tested and it works almost 100 times slower than color page.

I didn't measure the difference but I walked away from my MacBook and did several tasks while it was tracking in Fusion. On the color page it was done in less than 1 minute so I happily sat there watching the progress. Thanks for checking.

It tracks 3 times slower on my computer (Ryzen 3900x, RTX 3060 12GB).
If the resolution of the clip is larger than the timeline resolution, it will be even slower because fusion works at the resolution of the source clip.

The good news is that you don't lose magic mask like the color page after making adjustments, even if you delete the cache folder, it will regenerate on the fly.

I guess depending on your machine, it will either be acceptable or unusably slow. I'll try it with other media to see if it has anything to do with the particular codec (H265 10-bit, 422, UHD).

To be honest - and this is just my opinion - but I’ve found for almost everything I do Fusion is unusably slow (running a good setup - 11th gen i9, 3090, 64gb ram, nvmes etc), and I’ve long since given up with it. Even simple green screening is really not worth it.

I’d be curious to know if anyone on here uses it, and what sort of setup they are running?

I use Fusion standalone on a daily basis... Fusion has always been slower than Resolve so I don't even try to compare.
For instance there's no way at all Resolve could pull a key 50% as efficient as Fusion*, not to talk about the real compositing jobs obviously.
*(I mean a real key, like this old Damian example)

On the MMask topic, the advantage of Fusion is that you can work your mask further on with real tools, and adding Matte controls and anything related with edges or light wrap for instance won't defeat the MM tracking... until you close the project
So I usually do all the MM related job until the end, sometimes export the satisfying result, not to be forced to click "regenerate all" the next time I open the project (or don't close the projects for several days why not)

Are you talking about Fusion Standalone?
It works fine for me with Fusion inside Resolve, even if I close the project the magic mask is there without the need to regenerate.

The only problem is when I duplicate a clip with alt + drag, it loses the tracking data of magic mask and I have to re-track. If I use copy-paste instead, it works fine

Yes, in standalone Fusion... Something is lost so that you don't get back the postmultiplied characher/thing if you don't regenerate.

Yes I know, for me too. One just has to remember letting the node on its own and it's ok (even by making another parallel branch which doesn't involve the MM)
