increasing resolution & enhancing digitized videos of VHS

PostSun Nov 13, 2022 1:17 am

Please be gentle - I'm a noobie to DaVinci, and not that much older with Premiere Pro.

I have a bunch of digitized videos of old VHS tapes and would like to increase the resolution AND enhance the quality of the video - reduce noise, etc.

Before I spend a lot of time and effort trying to do so, I was wondering if anyone here has experience and is willing to share - what works best - DaVinci, Premiere Pro, or using separate tools to enhance, like AVCLabs Video Enhancer AI ot Topaz Lab Video Enhancer AI.

Anyone had great results and/or compared the above possibiities?

Thanks - Mark

I find the SuperScale feature in Resolve quite competent.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks for replying - I'm going to give that a try - I'm a Premiere Pro guy just trying to get comfortable with Resolve.

I have had very encouraging results with Topaz AI products. I have been able to get acceptable results from 8mm scans, and enlarging them 2x or 4x. How well that works with interlaced footage I don’t know.

Adjusting Color’s and contrast can make it look better already. Then go for NR and adjust it carefully. You may need quite a bit of experimentation there, it’s very dependent on scene and camera.
Finally, there’s SuperScale.
But don’t expect miracles. If your sources are interlaced, Topaz VAI may be better, try the time-limited demo.

Make sure to work in an interlaced project or Resolve (or any other app) will mangle the fields. beyond repair. Any geometry bound operations like scaling and translation have to be interlace aware

Or de-interlace before going into DR.
What’s your intended output?

Sorry - missed notification of the reply/question. Intent is to have a higher resolution and lower noise of digitized video tapes to match my other videos posted on YouTube and Vimeo, and in some cases to be able to edit together with higher resolution more recent video.

I’d first try the integrated tools then, in particular if your hardware is not top notch. Define your timeline as interlaced and use the neural de-interlacer. Export in the desired resolution and hope for the best.
If you are unhappy with the result, try the demo of TVAI, but don’t expect miracles.
